Bouquets in a planter in Bali: where the water actually is

Fresh flowers set in soaked foam in a ceramic planter, Bali

There is no reservoir sloshing about inside the container. The stems sit in floral foam, soaked through before assembly, and each one draws water through its own cut while the foam holds it at whatever angle the florist chose. Nothing is balanced, nothing is leaning on anything else, and the whole piece behaves as one object.

That is why a courier can carry it flat on a car floor with no towel underneath. Tilt it and nothing runs out.

Topping up is the only maintenance the recipient ever does. Pour slowly along the inner edge of the container until the foam feels wet again.

"People assume there is water in the bottom and go looking for it. There is water in the block, and the only thing to do is add a little when it stops feeling damp."

— JFLOO florist

Dry foam is the failure mode worth avoiding, because once the block has dried out it barely takes water back and the flowers above it do not recover. Keeping the piece away from a vent matters more than keeping it out of the sun: air conditioning is dry and moving, and it pulls moisture out of an open foam surface faster than warm still air does.

What a careless build looks like

Foam should be invisible from above. Sparse planting leaves dark wet gaps between the heads, and ribbon around the rim does not hide them once anyone looks down at the table while standing.

The outline is the second thing to check. A considered piece is domed, taller in the middle, sloping to a soft edge that follows the rim, while a flat disc of equal length stems means everything was cut to one measurement in a hurry.

The third check is the back. These pieces stand in the middle of a table rather than against a wall, so the reverse is seen as often as the front, and a bare patch there is the difference between a designed arrangement and a decorated one.

The fourth is the foam itself, which should be wet across its whole open surface rather than only under the flowers, where it is harder to reach with a jug.

Height is the last of them, and it depends on where the piece will stand. A table arrangement sits below the eye level of a seated adult so conversation carries across it, while a counter piece is taller and has a clear front, and the two are built differently from the first stem onwards.

The island side of it

Humidity here is high all year, and an open foam surface gives up its water more slowly than it would in a dry climate. Above 30 °C we still move to firm wrapping and pack a cooling element, because the road is longer than the map suggests.

Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur sit in a 90 to 150 minute window, while Uluwatu, Tabanan and remote villas take 3 to 4 hours, and a planter travels that distance without losing a drop. Kuta, Legian, Berawa, Jimbaran, Nusa Dua and Ubud fall between the two depending on the address. We work 9 AM to 10 PM.

Orchids and macrophylla hydrangea carry most of these builds, with lisianthus and ranunculus working the middle and tropical foliage covering the rim of the container. Seasonal peonies go in when they are cut.

Orders start at 650000 IDR, and payment goes through QRIS, GoPay, OVO, DANA or cash to the courier. The island is on GMT+8.

One limit is worth knowing before you order. Stems set in foam cannot be pulled out and recut, so a spent flower is lifted out and the others stay exactly where they were placed, and the container generally outlives the flowers by several years and ends up holding something else entirely.
