Dutch roses in Bali: the trade-offs, stated plainly

Muted Dutch roses in a low arrangement at a villa in Bali

The stems are shorter than those from equatorial plantations and the heads are smaller. Both of those are design decisions rather than faults, and both of them cost you something in certain orders.

A tall floor vase will swallow this group entirely, and a bouquet meant to be admired from the far end of a hall will not manage it. Those two jobs belong to a different rose and it is worth saying so before anybody pays.

"We turn down about one order a week in this group. Usually it is somebody who wants scale, and scale is the one thing these varieties cannot give."

— JFLOO florist

Orders start from 650,000 IDR with payment through QRIS, GoPay, OVO, DANA or cash to the courier, and none of that changes with the variety. What changes is how long the flowers hold, and that is worth understanding before choosing.

The shorter lived group

Garden varieties carry many petals packed loosely, which is exactly why they open into that broad rosette, and also why they open sooner and shed sooner than a tight bud from a high altitude farm.

Buying them tight is the sensible move whenever the flowers need to look their best three days after delivery rather than on the day itself. Said the other way round, a garden variety ordered for tonight should already be showing its centre when it goes out.

Ask about varieties every time you order, too. Breeders release new ones each season and growers drop whatever stopped selling, so a name from last year's photograph may simply not be grown any more, and a florist who confirms it without checking is guessing.

Where they fit best

A gift for someone who grows things themselves is the clearest case. That person has something to identify, compare and talk about, which a standard long stemmed red has never once provided.

Weddings are the second. A palette agreed months in advance needs precise tones, and this is the group that has them; the Jimbaran venues in particular tend to be planned that far ahead, and the flowers have to match a decision made from another country.

The third is a recipient who gets flowers often. In a villa or a suite where a bouquet arrives most weeks, novelty is worth more than size, and an unusual shape will be remembered after the identical red ones have blurred together.

Three questions settle most of it:

  • Is anyone going to look at these from closer than two metres.
  • Does the exact tone matter, or only the general colour.
  • Should they peak today or later in the week.

Heat and the length of the drive

At 30 °C and above, a loosely built garden head runs through its life faster than the same variety would in a cool room, so what we cut depends heavily on where the box is going. Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur take 90 to 150 minutes; Uluwatu, Tabanan and remote villas run up to 3 to 4 hours, and on the longer routes we hold the flowers back a stage.

The rains from November to March affect the schedule more than the flowers, and a morning slot is the safest choice for a distant address in either season. Delivery runs 9 AM to 10 PM.

Everything above assumes the box gets opened promptly. Cut the stems on a slant, take off the leaves that would sit under the water, and fill the vase properly, and a short stemmed rose with an unusual head will outlast the long stemmed one that was left in its sleeve until the evening.
