70 cm roses in Bali: what the stem records

Long rose stem held horizontally to check that it stays straight in a Bali workshop

Growing conditions change through the year, and the flower keeps a record of them. Long stems with heavy heads come from plants given time and light, so the same variety runs shorter and thinner after a poor stretch and thicker with a fuller bud after a good one. None of that appears on a price list.

Peak demand pulls the other way. Around the dates when everyone buys roses at once the market clears whatever exists, the long grades go first, and what remains is shorter than usual.

Order early for those dates if length is the part that matters to you. A week of waiting will not conjure a grade that has already been sold. Outside the peaks the long stems are easier to get and often better fed. This is also why a shop will sometimes offer a different variety at the length you asked for instead of the variety you named.

Ecuadorian stems reach 120 cm and are a different purchase entirely. At seventy the imported band still overlaps with what farms cut in volume, so the grade is around for more weeks of the year than the metre is. That availability, rather than the price, is usually what settles the order.

"A seventy is a seventy in the week it was cut. Two months later the same variety can arrive a grade shorter, and there is nobody to argue with about it."

Thickness is the honest signal. A genuine long-grade stem is noticeably thick at the cut and holds its line if you lift the rose horizontally by the middle. A thin stem at the same length sags into a curve, and it will do exactly the same in the vase once the head takes on water.

Leaves say something similar. Firm dark foliage close to the bud belongs to a well grown plant, while sparse pale leaves on a long stem usually mean the crop was pushed.

The bud should feel firm and springy.

What the island adds to that

Every rose here is imported, and the tall grades come out of the box in worse shape than the short ones. We hold them in deep buckets from the moment they land and build them last, right before the courier leaves. Orders start at 650000 IDR, and payment goes through QRIS, GoPay, OVO, DANA or cash to the courier.

Seventy centimetre roses standing in a heavy vase away from the walkway in a Bali villa

The drier season from April to October suits a long stem better than the rains from November to March. Above 30 °C and in high humidity we add firm wrapping and a cooling element. That buys the bouquet the drive, though not a whole afternoon on a terrace. Water left sitting on an outer petal in the wet months marks it by the next day.

Distance decides the rest. Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur sit inside a 90 to 150 minute window, while Uluwatu, Tabanan and villas off the main roads run to 3 to 4 hours, and for those addresses we send the buds tighter than you might expect to see them.

A tight bud on arrival is the flower reaching the table with its opening still ahead of it, which is what you want after three hours in a car. Guests occasionally read it as an unfinished order, and it is the opposite of that. We work from 9 AM to 10 PM and put the long routes at the start of the day.

70 cm roses in Bali want a heavy vase and a spot out of the walkway, and most villa kitchens have neither. Send us the height of whatever will hold them and we will trim the stems in the workshop. If the honest answer is a bucket for the first night, say so, because deep water beats a shallow bowl every time. And ask which variety carries the grade that week before you settle on a count.
