Designer-styled bouquets in Bali: what waits at the other end

An ordinary bouquet forgives the container it lands in. A structured one does not, because the outline is the whole point of it, and the wrong vessel undoes that outline in about a second.

The three shapes each want something specific. A tall narrow silhouette wants a straight-sided vase roughly half its height, in clear glass or plain ceramic. A low dome wants a wide bowl with a short neck, or the heads splay outwards and the curve flattens. A one-sided fan has to stand against something, since the back of it was never built to be looked at.

Cut glass, painted patterns and coloured vessels compete with the arrangement instead of holding it up, which is why florists keep returning to plain cylinders.

Villa kitchens are a lottery on this point. A rented house may have one heavy vase and nothing else, or a shelf of decorative pieces that all fight the flowers, and neither of those is something a courier can solve at the door. Guests staying at Nusa Dua hotels or at The Legian Seminyak usually find something plain in the room, and for an address in Ubud or out towards Tabanan we would rather know in advance and send the piece in a vessel it fits.

The drive is the other half of the answer

Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur sit in a 90 to 150 minute window. Uluwatu, Tabanan and remote villas take up to 3 to 4 hours, and every one of those minutes goes on the flowers rather than on the wrapping. Above 30 °C in high humidity we use firm wrapping and a cooling element, we build the stage tighter than the catalogue photograph shows, and we box the piece upright.

Between November and March the box stays closed until the courier is under cover.

Four things decide whether the shape survives the journey:

• The hour of the handover.
• Whether the recipient is at the address, or whether a gate, a guard or a villa manager takes it first.
• Extra stem length, so that the trim at the other end leaves the silhouette where the binding point put it.
• A plain surface with space around it. A crowded console breaks the outline into fragments, and the discipline that went into the build stops being visible at all.

What holds a line here

Imported roses at 60 to 90 cm carry most of this work, because the head is predictable and a dome needs that. Ecuadorian stems up to 120 cm go where height is the argument. Macrophylla hydrangea fills volume in one stem, ranunculus and lisianthus break the mass at one or two points, orchids and tropical foliage give the harder line when the piece should read from a doorway. Seasonal peonies belong at the top of a build that wants a soft finish.

Palette stays narrow. One tone with its neighbours, or two shades with a clear majority for one of them.
