Bouquets by flower in Bali: what the choice itself says

Most people order by occasion, by colour or by budget. This part of the catalogue is arranged the other way round, by the flower that ends up in the vase, and the collections under it are built from one species at a time.

Naming a flower is a smaller decision than it looks and a louder one than people expect.

A rose is understood everywhere and therefore says the least about the sender. It fits when the relationship is formal or new, and when you would rather the flowers were not interpreted at all. Imported stems at 60 to 90 cm and Ecuadorian ones reaching 120 cm cover that ground in either direction, formal or generous.

Choosing anything else is a claim to know the person. Orchids for a household that would rather keep something alive than watch something fade. Seasonal peonies for somebody who waits for them and mentions it. Hydrangea for a person who likes one large shape on a table and no fuss around it. The recipient reads all of that as attention paid, and the reading outlasts the flowers.

The risk sits in exactly the same place. A flower picked for its rarity rather than for the person lands as a purchase, and an unfamiliar name on the card carries none of the meaning that was intended.

Where the flowers are going, and what that changes

Four addresses where the species matters more than the size:

• An ocean villa, where somebody is usually home and a container exists.
• A hotel room in Nusa Dua, where the delivery reaches the building before it reaches the guest.
• A wedding venue in Jimbaran, where the flowers have to look the same at the end of the afternoon as they did at the start of it.
• A dinner in Ubud, which is the hardest of the four, since the bouquet travels to the restaurant, sits somewhere through a meal and then goes home in a car, and a delicate single species build is the wrong instrument for that whole sequence.

Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur sit in a 90 to 150 minute window. Uluwatu, Tabanan and the remote villas take up to 3 to 4 hours, and Kuta, Legian, Berawa, Jimbaran, Nusa Dua and Ubud fall between the two depending on the street. The practical half of the name

Humidity is high all year and above 30 °C we wrap firmly and add a cooling element. That protects any species, but it does not equalise them, and a build going out on the long window is chosen from the flowers that hold their shape after three hours in a vehicle.

Lisianthus and ranunculus are the half tone workers rather than the headline. They fill a mixed build beautifully and make a thin single species bunch, so when somebody names one of them we usually suggest it leads a bouquet instead of filling one on its own.

Tropical foliage belongs to every collection here and is the only element that never depends on a shipment.

The drier months from April to October make an outdoor handover simple. Between November and March the last few metres are planned around cover, which matters more for a soft flower than a firm one.
