Baskets with spray roses in Bali: the address decides the build
Delivery here splits into two very different jobs. Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur sit in a 90 to 150 minute window, while Uluwatu, Tabanan and the remote villas take up to 3 to 4 hours. A basket of spray roses copes with both, and the reason lies in how a thin stem is seated in foam.
Everything follows from that first push.
Getting a thin stem in
The stem of a spray rose is thinner and more flexible than that of a standard rose, which makes it awkward to seat. It has to travel several centimetres to reach wet foam and hold the angle it was given, and pushed too hard it buckles instead of penetrating. A florist cuts a long, sharp bevel so the point does the work, then drives the stem home in one movement. A stem that kinked on the way in looks perfectly normal from outside and drinks nothing at all, so the whole cluster on it fades two days before its neighbours. On a three hour run out to Uluwatu that failure turns up at the address rather than at the bench, which is why far deliveries get built slowly.
The angle is set once. Pull a stem out to correct it and the channel stays open behind it, the foam will not close around the same stem twice and stops feeding it altogether, so the decision belongs before the push and not after.
Four addresses, four builds
Almost every order in this shape lands in one of four places, and the road to each of them is a different length.
- An ocean villa where staff take the delivery and the guests come back in the evening.
- A long stay house in Sanur or Ubud, with somebody at home to top the foam up.
- A resort address in Seminyak or Canggu. The suitcase is unpacked, a vase was never part of the plan, and the arrangement has to be finished the moment it arrives.
- A wedding venue in Jimbaran, where the piece is set down once and nobody touches it again until the evening ends.
The St. Regis Bali Resort, Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan, Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, The Legian Seminyak and Alila Villas Uluwatu all take a delivery at the desk. At a private villa it is usually a member of the household staff, and the basket stands inside the house until the guests get back.
We work 9 AM to 10 PM, orders start at 650000 IDR, and payment goes through QRIS, GoPay, OVO, DANA or cash to the courier. Hours matter less than the handover, though. A basket that will wait several hours on a hall table before anybody sees it gets planted a stage tighter than one going into a room where dinner starts at seven.
Weather changes the packing more than the schedule. Above 30 °C and in high humidity we wrap the basket firmly and pack a cooling element, which covers the road and nothing past it. Indoors the arrangement wants shade and some distance from the air conditioning, since a dry stream from a split unit empties exposed foam faster than the afternoon outside ever does.
Imported roses at 60 to 90 cm carry the structure underneath. Ranunculus and lisianthus fill the gaps between clusters, and tropical foliage closes the foam along the rim so no bare band shows between the weave and the flowers.
