Valentine's Day in Bali: 14 February inside the wet season

The fourteenth of February lands in the wettest stretch of the Balinese year. Rain arrives in the late afternoon, hard and brief, and the roads stay slow after it. So the date is less about the bouquet than about the hour it arrives and the pin the driver aims at.

Orders for Valentine's Day flowers in Bali pile into one evening, and anything booked after lunch fights for the same three hours of road. We plan the day backwards from that.

Why roses cost more in February

Almost every rose sold here has flown in. Kenya, Ecuador and the Dutch auctions feed the same fortnight everywhere at once. Cargo space into Denpasar tightens with them. Wholesale climbs through the first half of the month, so a stem that costs one thing in October costs noticeably more on the 13th.

Order a week out, not the night before.

Ordering on the 14th still works. What narrows is the choice: you take what is left in the cooler that morning. A week lets us hold heads at the size you asked for and fix the delivery hour before the good slots go.

What people order on the 14th

Red roses take roughly half of what we build on this date. The rest goes to formats that suit a villa, a restaurant table or a suitcase better than an armful does.

• Red roses, 60–90 cm — the default, and the first stock to run out.
• Ecuadorian roses to 120 cm — for a handover seen across a room.
• Local orchids with tropical foliage — grown in Indonesia, so February barely lifts the price.
• Boxes — closed, water in the foam, nothing to arrange in a rented kitchen.
• Preserved roses — no water, no wilting, flat in the luggage.

Orchids earn their own paragraph. They take heat and humidity better than a rose does. Paired with monstera or palm they read as an island bouquet rather than a European one that got off a plane.

Who the bouquet is for

A wife of two years on the island has seen every red rose format sold here. Something in the wedding palette, or a box she can leave untouched on the table, beats a repeat of last year. A girlfriend more often wants it tall, visible, carried through a restaurant. For a proposal we go to a heart box or one preserved rose under glass, which outlasts the evening and the flight. For a couple marking their own anniversary on this date, send a photograph of the wedding flowers and we match the palette.

Length of the relationship shapes the order more than the budget. Ten years in, a smaller arrangement at 7 PM to a table already booked does more work than a 120 cm bouquet handed over in daylight.

Rain, routes and the hour on the card

Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur take 90 to 150 minutes from confirmation; Uluwatu, Tabanan and villas off the main roads take three to four hours. On 14 February, add to both. Low points on the Canggu back roads hold water after a hard rain. Between 6 PM and 9 PM, with cars parked along the Berawa lanes for dinner, the Seminyak–Canggu run can beat the drive out to Ubud.

Wrapping changes too. Above 30 °C we wrap firmly, pack a cooling element and add an outer layer that sheds water and comes off at the door. Kraft paper that has ridden through a squall does not photograph well.

Villa names repeat across Canggu and Berawa and the side lanes go unsigned, so a driver circling for twenty minutes is twenty minutes of a bouquet in a warm box. Send the map pin when you book.

Two island habits are worth knowing. A handover goes smoothest when someone on site can take the flowers if the door stays shut, so name that person in the order. A sunset dinner in Jimbaran or Uluwatu means the table is dressed before the light goes, so book 5:30 PM rather than the reservation hour. Couriers run 9 AM to 10 PM, prices start at 650,000 IDR, and payment goes through QRIS, GoPay, OVO, DANA or cash to the courier.
