Dried flowers in Bali: living with them in a humid house

Dried arrangement of grasses and seed heads on a console in a Bali villa

Two conditions matter and everything else is invention. Keep the vase dry, and keep the piece away from windows that take direct sun for hours at a time. Sunlight is what breaks the colour down, and it works faster on a cut stem than it ever did on the living plant.

Humidity is the real risk here.

A bathroom, a kitchen beside a hob or a room with laundry drying in it will soften stems within weeks. Plumes lose their line first, and dense heads eventually smell stale. On this island that list runs longer than it would elsewhere, since an open-sided living room between November and March is effectively outdoors. A shelf in a closed room is the safe answer to all of it. Dust is the slower problem and the easier one, cleared with a soft brush along the head.

"Dust is not what shortens a dried piece. A room where laundry dries will do more damage in a month than a year on a shelf."

Orders start from 650000 IDR, with payment through QRIS, GoPay, OVO or DANA, or in cash to the courier. Delivery in Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur takes 90 to 150 minutes, Uluwatu, Tabanan and remote villas run to 3 or 4 hours, and we work from 9 AM to 10 PM.

Three rules cover the whole of it:

  • A dry vase, with no water at any point.
  • A position out of hours of direct sun.
  • A closed room rather than an open terrace, particularly in the wet months.

Why people choose this material here

Dried flowers in Bali are bought for houses that stand empty half the time. A villa let by the week, an office, a place people come to at weekends: fresh flowers there are a commitment somebody has to keep, and this material asks for nothing at all.

It is also the only thing in the catalogue that can be delivered whenever suits the route. Nothing drinks and nothing wilts, so a box can be accepted a fortnight before the date and left unopened, and the usual question of who will be at the gate stops mattering. In the drier season from April to October that flexibility is convenient. Between November and March it is the difference between a delivery and a rearranged one.

The formats are a bunch in a dry vase, a wreath, a wall hanging, a low bowl for a table, or a single tall stem in a floor vase where one plume does the work of an arrangement. A wall hanging is worth considering first in a house where every horizontal surface is already taken, since it costs nothing in floor space and stays clear of a table that gets wiped down twice a day.

Position also decides how the colour ages. Natural wheat, ochre and grey-brown hold up in daylight considerably longer than dyed stems, so anything going near a window comes in the natural range and the dyed pieces go deeper into the room. A dried arrangement that has faded unevenly on one side cannot be rebalanced later; it is turned round, and the other side fades to match.

What you are sending is nearer to a small piece of decoration than to flowers, and choosing it by the room rather than by the occasion gives better results.

Tell us the room and how open it is to the weather. That answer decides both the material and the format, and it is the one thing about a dried piece we cannot work out from the address alone.
