Pink baskets in Bali: what scale does to a pale shade
Scale changes the tone of any colour, and pink is the one that tips first. A small posy in pale pink is quiet and reads as careful. The same shade filling a large container, with soft foliage and a pale ribbon, turns sugary in a way nobody intended.
The effect is worse in a room with pale walls, and worse again in daylight.
Depth in the body fixes most of it.
A mid or deep pink carries the volume and the pale shades come in as highlights, which is the opposite of how people describe the arrangement they think they want. Built the other way round, the pale takes over and the whole bowl goes flat by the second look. That one decision matters more than the list of flowers does.
Foliage is the other half. Dark, textured or grey toned leaves give pink an edge and stop it dissolving into the background, and greenery takes up more of the volume than the flowers do anyway. It is worth asking what is going in beside the pink rather than only which blooms are used.

The container decides the rest. Natural ginger willow warms coral and salmon and turns cold fuchsia slightly lilac. Bleached and grey weave stay neutral at both ends of the range, while a dark basket makes bright pink jump and drains the powder shades almost to white.
Where the scale question actually comes up
Jimbaran wedding venues and Nusa Dua hotels order the largest builds we make, and those are the ones that go sugary if nobody plans the depth. Ubud dinners run smaller and warmer. Ocean villas and the resort addresses around Seminyak and Canggu sit somewhere between the two, and the answer usually depends on whether the bowl stands indoors or on a terrace.
The working day is 9 AM to 10 PM. Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur fall in a 90 to 150 minute window, while Uluwatu, Tabanan and the remote villas take up to 3 to 4 hours.
Humidity is the part that catches people out. Above 30 °C we wrap firmly and add a cooling element, and the wrapping comes off the moment the bowl is set down. A pale pink petal held against film in warm damp air goes translucent within the hour. On a deep pink it barely shows, and on a powder shade it looks like age. From November to March we add route time for the rain.

Imported roses at 60 to 90 cm carry the mid depths that a large bowl needs, and Ecuadorian stems up to 120 cm come down to the rim. Macrophylla hydrangea gives one broad block that stops a wide build reading as scattered. Seasonal peonies, ranunculus and lisianthus sit at the softer end and are grouped rather than spread, and orchids hold the upper lines above tropical foliage.
