### Roses in a box in Bali: built for an address with no vase in it Most orders in this format go somewhere that has no vase. A villa kitchen stocked for guests, a room at a Nusa Dua hotel, a rented house in Berawa where the glassware is counted per person. The box was built for exactly that. It travels flat and is handed over open. Nothing needs unwrapping and nothing needs cutting, so the first job at the door is finding a surface. Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur sit in a 90 to 150 minute window. Uluwatu, Tabanan and the remote villas take up to 3 to 4 hours. The longer leg is where a box does better than a wrapped bunch, since every stem is fixed in foam and the heads do not knock together on the bends. #### What sits under the flowers The roses in a fresh box stand in soaked floral foam, cut short and set almost upright. Everything else about the gift follows from that. Preserved boxes are a different product. There the heads are glued to a firm base, they never ask for water, and they hold their look for a year or more. Fresh foam gives about a week and a half and needs topping up every day. Settling that question before assembly saves an awkward moment at the villa gate. #### Day one Water should not wait until the evening: pour a thin stream at the rim, in the gap between the card wall and the outer heads, until the top of the foam stops taking it. Never pour over the flowers, because water that settles between rose petals leaves brown edges by the next morning, and on a pale variety it reads from across the room. Then look at the box in profile rather than from above, which is the view a photograph never gives and the one that tells you how it was built. Where the box stands gets decided in that first hour and is rarely revisited afterwards. Keep it off a sunny terrace table and out of the direct draught of an air conditioner, since moving dry air takes the top of the foam down faster than a still warm room does. #### Four kinds of address Roses in a box in Bali go out to four situations. Each one changes what we build and how the handover works. - A villa in Seminyak or Canggu. We ask which entrance the courier should use, since the gate and the house work as two separate addresses. - A hotel room in Nusa Dua. If the box has to be standing in the room before the guest arrives, the window is agreed the day before. - A dinner in Ubud or a wedding venue in Jimbaran: the box wants its own surface, otherwise it argues with the table setting. - A remote address out towards Tabanan or Uluwatu. Long drive, morning slot, and a clear answer about who is home, because an open box cannot be left on a step in the sun. Above 30 °C and in high humidity we use firm wrapping and a cooling element.
