Graduation flowers in Bali: small ceremonies, tropical bouquets

Graduation bouquet of white orchids and tropical foliage

Most graduations we deliver to happen outdoors. The international and alternative schools here run small: a year group of ten or twelve, a ceremony in the school garden or on a villa lawn. Parents arrive in linen shirts, someone's younger brother is barefoot on the grass, and the whole thing is over in forty minutes with the chairs still out.

That setting picks the flowers before anyone asks us. Not cellophane and a printed ribbon but orchids, tropical foliage and something loose enough to still move when the graduate walks up.

The other half of the brief comes from off the island. A parent orders from Moscow, London or Melbourne because the child has been at school here two or three years. Sometimes the family flies in. Sometimes nobody can, the ceremony streams from a propped-up phone, and the flowers are the only part of the family physically in the room.

On those orders the card does the work.

Write it yourself and send it typed, and we copy it out by hand. Names in Cyrillic, Bahasa or Mandarin come through fine that way, and three slightly awkward lines are what a sixteen-year-old actually keeps in a drawer.

What goes into the bouquet here

Heat sets the flower list more than taste does. Above 30 °C, with humidity behind it, open roses and peonies soften within a couple of hours on a lawn with no shade. Dendrobium and mokara orchids hold. Monstera, philodendron and palm leaf carry the volume without the weight. Lisianthus and ranunculus sit in the middle where the leaves shade them, and we build as close to the delivery hour as the day's run allows.

  • Length — 40 to 60 cm, light enough to hold through the speeches.
  • Structure — orchids and foliage as the frame, softer stems inside.
  • Wrap — kraft or plain fabric, no plastic sleeve; it fogs in this air.
  • Water — a hydrating base if dinner follows straight after.
  • Colour — white, cream and green read cleanly against grass.

Bouquets for boys are a real question and we get asked it every year. Greenery-heavy with white orchids, or a single variety with no filler and no ribbon, gets carried the whole afternoon without embarrassment.

"Every graduation bouquet I build gets held for an hour before anyone puts it down. That decides the weight, the wrap and half the flower list."

Landing it on the hour

These ceremonies start on time and end fast, and no school garden has a desk that will mind flowers. Send the map pin rather than the address, because plenty of these venues sit down a gang with no number on the gate. Give us the start time and we aim to arrive twenty to thirty minutes ahead of it, into the hands of a parent or a teacher.

Graduation delivery to a school garden ceremony in Ubud

Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur take 90 to 150 minutes from confirmation; Uluwatu, Tabanan and the inland villas need three to four hours. Most international school ceremonies fall in May and June, at the dry end of the year, though anything pinned to a four o'clock start still deserves a day's notice.

Couriers run 9 AM to 10 PM, island time, GMT+8. Set the slot against Bali's clock, which is where an order placed eight time zones away tends to go wrong. Prices start at 650,000 IDR and most of these sit near that floor. A foreign card covers the parent who has never been here, QRIS, GoPay, OVO and DANA go through from a local number, and the courier still takes cash at the gate.

"The orders that stay with me are from parents who could not fly in. They send the card text at three in the morning their time, and they always ask for the photograph before the ceremony starts."

We send that photograph over WhatsApp or Telegram before the courier leaves and at handover. For a sender watching a stream from another continent it is the only proof the thing arrived. It also catches the case where the ceremony has moved from the garden to a covered terrace, which happens often enough that we ask about it when we call ahead.

Send the hour, the map pin and a number for whoever will be at the gate, and tell us whether the family will be there in person. We size graduation flowers in Bali to be held through the speeches and carried home on a scooter afterwards, which is the test that actually matters.
