Flower bags in Bali: what handles change about the handover

Flower bag with handles set down on a stone terrace of an ocean villa in Bali

A tied bouquet is carried in front of the body with both arms. Whoever holds it cannot open a door, take out a phone or press a lift button without asking somebody for help. A bag hangs from one hand instead, the arm drops to the side, the piece rides at knee height, and the person receiving it keeps moving.

On this island the difference is mostly about distance. Very little of a delivery happens at the kerb: there is a gate, a garden path, a set of steps, and often a member of staff walking the gift the last stretch to a terrace.

Handles survive all of that without instructions.

Resort corridors are the clearest test of it. A tied bouquet has to be held out in front for the whole walk, turning sideways past every person coming the other way, and by the third turn somebody is holding it above their head to get through. The same flowers in a bag go down at the side and the walk stops being an event.

The tied bouquet still wins on volume for the money. Stems inside a rigid container take up internal space, and the container costs something on its own, so the same budget shows less width and less height than an armful of the same flowers would. That is a real loss and worth naming before anyone pays for it.

Four handovers where the handles decide the format:

  • A villa by the ocean, where the piece comes in through a garden and is set down on a stone floor.
  • A hotel in Nusa Dua, where somebody at reception carries it onward.
  • A dinner in Ubud, and the gift has to stand beside a chair for the evening rather than occupy the table.
  • A wedding venue in Jimbaran, where the recipient is already holding something, has both hands busy for most of the day, and needs a gift that can be put down and picked up again without anyone rebuilding it.

Timing, the threshold and how people pay

Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur sit in a 90 to 150 minute window. Uluwatu, Tabanan and the remote villas take up to 3 to 4 hours, and an address that far out should be booked with the hour of the handover attached rather than a vague afternoon. We work 9 AM to 10 PM, orders start from 650000 IDR, and payment goes through QRIS, GoPay, OVO, DANA or cash to the courier. Bali is on GMT+8.

Tall arrangement in a fabric bag standing at a villa entrance in Bali

Kuta, Legian, Berawa and Jimbaran fall between those two windows depending on the actual address, so it is worth giving the street rather than the area. Flower bags in Bali are also the format we suggest for the drier months from April to October, when a gift is more likely to spend part of its day outdoors on a terrace.

The material inside

Above 30 °C and in high humidity we wrap firmly and add a cooling element, which a rigid container takes better than paper does. Imported roses at 60 to 90 cm stand straight in a standard liner. Ecuadorian stems reaching 120 cm need the wall of the bag raised, or the proportion breaks. Lisianthus and ranunculus go towards the middle where neighbouring stems support them, macrophylla hydrangea adds volume and weight in equal measure, and orchids with tropical foliage handle a long drive better than anything else we build with.

Seasonal peonies want a few days of notice.

"The question I ask first is whether anyone will be at the door. If the answer is staff rather than the recipient, handles stop being a style choice."

Tell us the district, the hour and who opens the door. The district sets the delivery window, the hour decides whether we send the piece out before the heat of the day, and the answer about the door changes the height of the bag more than the flower list does.
