### Pink roses in Bali: one word covering a very long distance Pink covers more ground in roses than any other colour name. At one end sits a bloom so pale it passes for white until a white rose is put beside it, and at the other a saturated fuchsia that reads across a room. Order pink without saying anything else and the florist chooses from that whole span on your behalf. Disappointment in this colour is rarely a quality problem. It is two people using the same word for different flowers, and it happens most often when the sender is abroad and the recipient is here, since neither of them ever sees the same bouquet at the same moment. #### Which way the pink leans The useful distinction is warm against cool rather than light against dark. A warm pink carries orange underneath it and sits close to salmon, coral and peach, so it looks sunlit even under a dull lamp. A cool pink carries blue underneath and runs towards mauve and raspberry, which makes it cleaner and slightly severe. Both can be pale, both can be deep. Put one of each in the same bunch and the warm heads look faded while the cool ones look artificial, though neither is at fault. Say the direction out loud when you order.
