### Unusual bouquets in Bali: what the recipient has to do with it This is the part almost no sender considers. An unconventional arrangement arrives with instructions attached, and the person who has to follow them is not the person who chose it. That gap is where the format usually fails, long before anyone gets to whether the flowers were nice. Asymmetric work is the clearest case. A long line thrown out to one side moves the centre of gravity out with it, so a light vase goes over the first time somebody walks past the table. One sided builds show a flat back if they are set in the middle of a room. Anything built on a frame cannot be taken apart and spread around the house the way a normal bunch can, which for a recipient used to redistributing flowers between two rooms is a genuine restriction rather than a detail. > "The question I ask is not what they like. A sentence at handover saves the arrangement from being repotted into whatever was nearest. #### Mixed material needs one line of explanation If an arrangement combines fresh blooms with anything dried, the two halves run on different clocks. The fresh part finishes in a week or so and is meant to be lifted out. What stays behind can hold for months, and the recipient should be told that before the first flowers go, or they will read a working arrangement as a dying one and throw the whole thing away. Humidity here complicates that further. Air is damp all year, more so during the rainy season from November to March, and dried material softens in it rather than holding the crisp edge it was chosen for. We say which months suit that kind of build and which do not, instead of taking the order and hoping. Fresh work has no such argument. Orchids hold longer in this climate than anything else we cut, macrophylla hydrangea gives loose mass against a hard surface, tropical foliage carries a shape on its own, and imported roses at 60 to 90 cm anchor the whole thing so it still reads as a bouquet rather than as an experiment. #### Where it misfires, and how it travels The sender who is not in the room is the risk we see most. Orders come from another country for a recipient nobody has described to us, and an unusual build is exactly the kind of gift that needs the room, the person and the shelf to be known in advance. Sending blind, a well built ordinary bouquet is the better instrument, and choosing it is a judgement rather than a retreat. Distance is the second constraint. Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur run 90 to 150 minutes, while Uluwatu, Tabanan and villas outside the settlements take up to 3 to 4 hours, and an arrangement with a long line travels upright, fixed at the base, with clearance above it. Above 30 °C we use firm wrapping and a cooling element, which on an open structural build means packing the base rather than the heads.
