Flowers in a small bag in Bali: a shallow water bed on a long road

Water poured at the rim of a small floral bag on a Bali villa terrace

The foam block in a small bag is thin, and it evaporates at much the same rate as a large one, so it runs dry sooner than any other box format. On this island the two things that empty it fastest sit in the same house: an open terrace above 30 °C, and a cooled room with a vent blowing across the table.

Distance does the rest. Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur sit in a 90 to 150 minute window, while Uluwatu, Tabanan and the remote villas run up to 3 to 4 hours, so a bag going that far leaves with the foam saturated to the point of dripping rather than merely wet. In high humidity above 30 °C we close the packing more firmly and add a cooling element, and in the rainy season from November to March we add route time.

Three habits keep one going:

  • A thin stream at the rim every morning, and again in the evening in a warm room.
  • Somewhere out of direct sun and out of the airflow from a vent.
  • Spent heads pulled out as they go, since one drooping stem spoils the whole object.

Once the foam has dried through, water will not bring it back.

Orders start at 650000 IDR, payment goes through QRIS, GoPay, OVO, DANA or cash to the courier, and hours run 9 AM to 10 PM.

"A bag is the one format where we write the watering on the handle. It holds so little that a single missed morning shows by the next one."

Handing it over

The handles change the transfer. It passes from one hand to one hand the way any bag does, and neither person has to work out where to hold it, which is what makes it usable on a stairwell, in a lift or at a counter.

It also stands upright the whole way, so a courier never has to lay it flat or wrap a cone around it. On a road out to Uluwatu or Tabanan that matters more than it sounds, because a low centre of gravity survives braking and camber that would flatten one side of a wrapped bouquet.

Villas are where the handover gets complicated. Staff often accept the delivery hours before the guests are back, and a bag standing on a counter in a warm room is losing water that whole time, which is why for those addresses it goes out with the foam at its wettest and the note about topping up tied where somebody will see it.

Where the small size is the point

Floral bag carried by its handles at a villa doorway in Bali

An apartment in Seminyak or Canggu with no vase in it. A villa bedroom where the only table is already in use. A dinner in Ubud where the bag sits at the end of the table and nobody has to look around it. Hotels in Nusa Dua and addresses like The St. Regis Bali Resort, Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan, Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, The Legian Seminyak and Alila Villas Uluwatu take it without a box or a stand, because it holds itself upright on anything flat.

What it will not do is impress a room, and when the occasion genuinely calls for scale everybody can tell that a bag is the wrong tool for it.

Imported roses cut short, lisianthus, ranunculus and seasonal peonies fill one of these well, with orchids holding longer than the rest and a single macrophylla hydrangea head working as the base when the bag has to read as full. Flowers in a small bag in Bali are planted the morning they go out, and the number of stems comes from the holes in the foam rather than from the size of the bag on the shelf.
