Seasonal bestsellers in Bali: planning a date around a flower

Seasonal stems being sorted before assembly in a Bali workroom

If somebody has a favourite flower, the useful question to ask a florist is not whether it is available. It is when the window opens. A birthday in the middle of a peak is a different bouquet from the same birthday three weeks later, at the same price.

Where the date cannot move, move the order.

Bringing a delivery forward by two days at the end of a window often means full-sized heads instead of small ones. Nobody minds flowers arriving early, and everybody notices flowers arriving thin. The reverse works as well: a date falling just before a window opens is worth waiting out by a few days when the gift can be late without causing offence. Most senders never ask, because availability sounds like a yes or no question. It behaves much more like a calendar.

"The question worth asking is not whether we have peonies. It is which fortnight they are ours for."

— JFLOO florist

There is a version of this for people who are only here for a fortnight themselves. If the recipient leaves at the end of the month, the seasonal item goes in at the start of its wave, since there may be no second chance to send the same bouquet before they fly. Somebody staying through the year can afford to wait until the crop is arriving in quantity and take the larger heads for the same money.

The same logic applies to a standing order. A monthly arrangement for a villa or an office is worth planning around windows rather than around a fixed list, because the fixed list quietly turns into whatever is closest to it by the third month.

For a wedding or an event, a seasonal shortlist is a starting point rather than a plan. Build the palette around what is at peak that month and keep one substitute agreed in advance, because a narrow window shifts with the weather and the shift is never announced.

Two clocks on one island

Seasonal bestsellers in Bali arrive on different schedules. Imported roses at 60 to 90 cm and Ecuadorian roses up to 120 cm come in a steady stream, macrophylla hydrangea, lisianthus and ranunculus run in seasons, orchids and tropical foliage are available almost always, and seasonal peonies show up for a few weeks and disappear. A crop reaches this section when it arrives in volume, and volume is what makes a large arrangement affordable rather than a small one.

The island's year splits in two: a drier season from roughly April to October and a rainy one from November to March. Above 30 °C, and in the humidity that comes with it, we use firm wrapping and a cooling element, and on the long routes that decision matters more than the choice of variety.

Delivery in Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur takes 90 to 150 minutes, while Uluwatu, Tabanan and remote villas run to 3 or 4 hours. We work from 9 AM to 10 PM, and a delivery going to the far end of the island is worth booking earlier in the day than one crossing Seminyak.

Orders start from 650000 IDR, with payment through QRIS, GoPay, OVO or DANA, or in cash to the courier.

Tell us the date first and the flower second. If the two do not line up we will say so, and the choice at that point is a different week or a different crop, which is a far better conversation to have before anything is cut.
