Mother's Day in Bali: three dates, one island

Soft-toned Mother's Day bouquet made in Bali

Indonesia keeps Mother's Day on 22 December. It is Hari Ibu, a national date rather than a day off. Offices stay open, schools run to the bell, and the date has to fit around a working day instead of replacing one.

That is nine days before New Year. So the December peak never stands alone — it sits inside the run of villa arrivals and restaurant tables that fills the last ten days of the month.

Two more dates run alongside it. The Russian-speaking community here keeps the last Sunday of November. Most of Europe and the US keep a Sunday in May. So this category peaks three times a year, and the peaks share almost no senders and no weather.

Which calendar the family is on

Plenty of families here keep two.

A household with two nationalities marks both, and nobody in it finds that odd. Then 22 December arrives whether the family keeps it or not, because the school does. Indonesian schools mark Hari Ibu, so children come home with the date in their heads and a parent orders for a grandmother that evening.

December is the one we plan hardest for. Roses are imported, and boxes landing in the third week are spoken for by Christmas tables. Hari Ibu sits three days before that. It is also the wet season, so afternoon rain is a fixture and the Uluwatu and Tabanan runs stretch. Order for the twenty-second by the eighteenth and settle the New Year week in the same call — it is one stock list.

November is the quiet one. The rain has only just started, the island is not busy yet, and a bouquet ordered on Friday for Sunday causes nobody any trouble.

May is the simplest date to deliver on: dry season, clear roads, no rain window. The complication is distance: those senders are working out an hour from the far side of the world. Bali runs on GMT+8, so nine in the morning in Madrid is our mid-afternoon, and nine here is still Saturday evening on the US East Coast.

The order comes from the next district

Plenty of these bouquets are ordered from twenty minutes away, by the child who moved here while the mother visits. There is no time zone to work around, somebody can meet the courier at the gate, and the flowers travel one district rather than crossing a border.

It makes the brief better. A sender who has stood in the room knows the table and the hour. Mother's Day flowers in Bali still go wrong on size more than on anything else. The 120 cm Ecuadorian roses photograph well, then sit in a corner of a villa that owns no vase tall enough for them.

Calmer colour, a build she can carry

Sixty to ninety centimetres is the working range, built mid-size with the weight kept low. It fits a dinner table, the back of a scooter, and the suitcase conversation that comes up at the end of every visit.

Bouquet delivered to a villa in Sanur

Colour goes quieter here than it does for a birthday. Deep red reads as romance here as it does anywhere, so it belongs to February and to anniversaries. Blush, cream, soft peach and white with green sit better, and they hold in the flat afternoon light where the photograph gets taken.

  • Orchids with tropical foliage — holds longest through a humid December.
  • Roses at 60–90 cm — mid-size, one colour, wrapping without shine.
  • Lisianthus — ruffled like a small rose, low scent for a bedroom.
  • Preserved roses — for a mother flying home, since cut stems cannot fly.

"I ask when she flies out before anything else. A mother leaving on Wednesday and a mother staying six weeks want two different bouquets."

Holding power is the last thing to settle. Above 30 °C we wrap firmly and pack a cooling element, and a bouquet left in an open-air pavilion still fades faster than one in an air-conditioned bedroom.

Couriers run 9 AM to 10 PM. Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur take 90–150 minutes from confirmation; Uluwatu, Tabanan and the remote villas need three to four hours. Prices start at 650,000 IDR; QRIS, GoPay, OVO, DANA or cash at the gate all work. Send the unit number with the map pin: a driver phoning from an unlit lane in Berawa loses the slot for everyone behind you.

Mother's Day flowers in Bali need one line the others can skip: which of the three dates you mean. Give us that, the district and the hour she will be in the room, and December stops being the awkward month it usually is.
