### Orchid bouquets in Bali: what the wrap is doing and what the drive costs Orchids come from tropical species, and the air on this island is close to the one they grew up in. Humid, warm, slow moving. Nothing happening outdoors is drying the petal edge. Indoors is where the damage comes from. Cold reads as injury on this flower and it does not show up as ordinary wilting: the edge of the petal turns glassy, then brown, and it never recovers. A villa air conditioner aimed at the wall behind a vase does that steadily over a few days. So the wrap on this bouquet is working equipment. It closes over the top of the flowers instead of leaving them open to the air, and it stays on until the bouquet is inside and has come up to room temperature. The element sits against the wall of the box, well clear of the flowers, since an even temperature inside is what keeps the spray steady on a long drive. The wet months from November to March change nothing about the flower and a fair amount about the state of the box at the door. It arrives wet on the outside and stays shut until it is under a roof. Opening it takes two minutes and most people do those two minutes in the wrong order. Cut the tape, lift the arrangement out by its binding point, stand it in water, and take the wrap down last. Orchid stems are thin and the blooms are heavy for them, so a spray hauled out by the flower end reaches the vase with a kink under one head. #### Two windows, one island Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur sit in a 90 to 150 minute window. Uluwatu, Tabanan and the villas further out run up to 3 or 4 hours, so an order going to one of those is better placed in the morning than late in the evening. Deliveries run 9 AM to 10 PM. Three kinds of address take most of this work: - Ocean villas, where the arrangement has to still look right on the last morning of the stay. - Nusa Dua hotels, where the box is handed over at the address and carried up by staff. - Jimbaran wedding venues, where the work is built ahead of the day and has to stand through it. #### Why they outlast their company What all that handling buys is standing life. Cut orchid sprays outlast nearly everything they are paired with, which is why the imported roses in the same arrangement are the first to go and why the tropical foliage around them is chosen to hold the shape after the roses have been pulled out. Orchid bouquets in Bali get ordered for exactly that reason more often than for the look of them. A guest arriving for a long stay wants something that is still standing at the end of it. The difference eventually becomes somebody's small job. A mixed arrangement thins from the top as the roses give out, and the sprays are left holding up a bunch that has lost a good part of its volume. Pull the spent stems, cut the foliage back, move everything into a smaller vessel, and the same orchids carry on for another stretch. One last thing to expect on the spray itself. The buds at the tip usually stay closed for good once the stem has been cut, so the flowers you can see are the flowers you have paid for, and a count that includes unopened tips is a generous count.
