### Carnations: cut them between the nodes and they do the rest Run a finger down a carnation stem and you can feel the swollen nodes along its length. That is where most people cut, and it is the one place a carnation should never be cut. Water moves poorly across a node. A stem trimmed at the joint drinks far less than one trimmed a centimetre below it, and the difference shows up as a bunch that goes soft in a week when it had a fortnight in it. The rest of the care is routine. Leaves off the lower third, a clean vase, fresh water every two or three days, a fresh cut each time. > "We show people the nodes when we hand the bouquet over. A room that roses find too hot will not shorten a carnation much, and in a climate with no cool season that is most of its case. #### What a modern bunch actually looks like The flower carries an old reputation as the cheap, dutiful choice, earned by decades of identical bunches of short red singles standing bolt upright. Nothing about the plant requires that shape. Spray varieties put several heads of different sizes on one stem and produce a loose, uneven outline, and the colour range now runs through dusty pinks, apricot, cream, lime and two-tone edges. Length matters as much as colour. Short stems in a tight upright bundle look institutional; long stems in a relaxed hand-tie do not. Put those into a round spiral build with tropical foliage and varied stem heights, and the old association never arrives at all. #### Where the island puts them Carnation bouquets in Bali go to rented villas, short stays and tables nobody is going to fuss over. A bunch left on a villa dining table with no daily attention still looks like a bunch when the next set of guests walks in. Distance helps the argument. Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur take 90 to 150 minutes; Uluwatu, Tabanan and the villas further out take up to 3 to 4 hours, and a carnation minds three hours in a box far less than a rose does. We work 9 AM to 10 PM. Access is the slower half of most deliveries here. Gates along the villa roads are shut, the person who opens is not always the recipient, and a box can wait by a wall while somebody is found. A carnation survives that wait in a way very little else on the price list does. Above 30 °C, and with the humidity that comes with it here, we still use firm wrapping and a cooling element. Dusty pink and cream go out to the villas, lime and the two-tone edges to anyone who wants the bunch photographed, and a single-shade armful holds together on a long table better than a mix of four strong colours. Volume is the other thing they buy you. An armful of carnations costs less than the same width in imported roses and holds its shape on a long table for longer, which is why they turn up at Jimbaran wedding venues far more often than the flower's reputation would suggest. The one thing to check at the far end is what else is on the table. Ripening fruit gives off ethylene, carnations answer to it faster than most cut flowers, and a bowl of it beside the vase will put a bunch with ten days left to sleep in one or two.
