### Protea bouquets in Bali: what to look at when the box is open A protea has to be built into an arrangement. It cannot be added to one. A florist who assembles everything else first and pushes the woody stem in at the side hands over a bunch that tips over physically, because all the mass is now sitting off centre and nothing underneath is holding it. So the first thing to look at is the binding point. Follow the woody stem down and see where it enters the bundle. It should run through the middle. That single check tells you more about the workshop than the flower count does. > "You can hear a badly built protea bunch. Put it down on a table and it settles sideways with a knock. A good one just stands there." > JFLOO florist The second thing is the company it keeps. Thick leathery foliage, tropical greens, dried material, anything with the same density all belong beside it. Roses do not. A garden rose next to a protea looks like a guest who wandered into the wrong photograph, and the mismatch has nothing to do with colour, so changing the shade fixes none of it. It comes out of the material itself, thin petal against stiff bract, and the eye picks it up from several metres away. Third, the leaves below the waterline should be gone before the box ever reaches you. Protea foliage darkens fast under water and takes the water down with it. A workroom that leaves that job to the recipient has skipped a step everywhere else too. Fourth, and this one surprises people, blackened leaves further up the stem are not a fault. Protea foliage darkens from a shortage of light and stored sugars while the head carries on looking exactly as it did on day one. Strip the dark leaves off and the bare stem under a heavy head reads cleaner than it did before. Protea built into the centre of an arrangement with tropical foliage in Bali #### What a villa does to the arrangement Rooms here are open, and that turns out to suit this flower. Air moving through a living space dries a thin petal within hours and does almost nothing to a bract, so a protea arrangement can stand where nothing softer would survive: on a terrace table, near open doors, in a room with a fan running. Humidity is not a problem while the flower is drinking. It becomes one much later, once the stems are being left to dry out in place, since damp air marks the foliage and those marks do not come off. Above 30 °C the box travels with firm wrapping and a cooling element against the wall, and between November and March it arrives wet on the outside and gets opened under a roof. Vessels are where villa orders come unstuck. Rented houses are full of tall slim glass, and a single protea in one of those goes over the first time somebody walks past with a bag. Ask what is in the house before ordering, or take a vessel from us with the flowers. Weight low down and a neck narrow enough to grip the stem is all it needs. Placement follows the same logic as the build. Set the arrangement against a plain wall or on a surface with nothing else on it, because a protea in front of pattern loses the outline that made it worth buying, and a villa full of carved wood and textiles offers plenty of ways to lose it. Single protea stem in a heavy narrow necked vessel on a villa terrace #### Ordering Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur run on a 90 to 150 minute window, while Uluwatu, Tabanan and villas further out take up to 3 or 4 hours. Deliveries run 9 AM to 10 PM. Catalogue orders start at 650000 IDR, and payment goes through QRIS, GoPay, OVO, DANA or cash to the courier. Protea bouquets in Bali are usually two or three stems rather than an armful, and that is a build decision rather than a budget one. Tell us the table and the room, and the stem count follows from there.
