The question comes up most on longer bookings. A villa taken for a fortnight gets one arrangement in the first week and a decision about the second, and that decision rests on what the stems look like rather than on how the heads have held up. Gilded leaves and dried branches sit outside the test entirely, since nothing in them was alive to begin with, and the living stems beside them can be judged the ordinary way. How much gold goes in changes this as well. Past roughly a third of the volume the arrangement stops reading as flowers and starts reading as a decorative object, which is sometimes the brief for a stage or a corporate handover and sometimes a quiet disappointment on a dining table. Wrapping affects how much metal an arrangement needs in the first place. Charcoal and black push the gold forward, so a smaller share of coated material reads as plenty, while pale paper asks for more of it before the shine registers. White, deep burgundy, dark tropical foliage and charcoal wrapping all carry gold well. Silver in the same arrangement does not, since two metals side by side cancel each other and both look cheaper for the company. - The stem end. Slippery means finished, whatever the head looks like. - The leaves. Softening there is the first honest signal a coated arrangement gives. - The water. If it clouds within hours of a change, paint below the waterline needs wiping off the stem. Above 30 °C with high humidity we wrap firmly and add a cooling element, and a coated arrangement travels closed for a second reason. Moisture streaks a painted film and turns loose glitter into grey lumps that will not brush out, so the box is opened indoors rather than at a villa gate. 
Ask for gilded leaves and dried branches when the flowers should keep their scent and their normal life, and for sprayed heads when the arrangement has to hold a room from a distance. Tell us which of the two matters on the day, and whether anyone will be looking after it during the week, because a bouquet nobody inspects is better built with the metal kept off the living part entirely.
