### Cream bouquets in Bali: what has to stand behind them Cream has almost no contrast of its own. Put it against a white wall, a white villa interior or a white dress and its outline goes, leaving a soft blur where a bouquet should be. That is a live problem on this island, because a great many rooms here are white by design. Dark green foliage is the oldest solution and still the best one. A cream head against a deep leaf reads instantly, since the eye is finally given an edge to find. The same bouquet with pale grey foliage looks half dissolved. Tropical foliage does this job better than most imported greenery, being dark, broad and free of any blue cast. Paper does the same work from the outside. White wrapping is worth avoiding, since it competes with pale flowers on their one shared quality and loses, while kraft, taupe, stone, deep green and charcoal all give cream a border. Four backgrounds decide how a cream bouquet reads here: - A white villa wall, which erases the outline unless the foliage or the wrap is dark. - Timber and rattan, which flatter the shade and need nothing added at all. - Bright sand and open sky at a beach venue, where the flowers have to be photographed against the ground and not the horizon. - A restaurant table in the evening, where one warm lamp pulls the whole bouquet yellow. Cameras are harsher than eyes here. A phone meters for whatever is brightest in frame, so a cream bouquet in a bright room comes out blown to plain white with no petal detail at all, which is why photographs of these bouquets so often disappoint the person who paid for them. Shooting against a dark surface fixes it in one move, and so does turning the bouquet until light falls across the petals. That advice matters more with a delivery than it does in a shop. From November to March the box stays closed until it is indoors, since water drying on a pale petal leaves a visible outline. On a red flower that mark disappears, and on cream it reads as dirt. Imported roses at 60 to 90 cm and Ecuadorian stems up to 120 cm run from near white through to ochre, lisianthus and ranunculus hold a steadier version of the tone, and macrophylla hydrangea supplies pale mass with no yellow in it. Peonies move fastest of all. A cream peony goes from a tight green ball to a wide pale cup in about three days.
