#### Rooms on this island, and what they do to it
Villa interiors here run to wood, rattan and warm lamps in the evening, which is the hardest combination for a violet bouquet. The warm light strips out the blue side, the dark timber behind removes the contrast, and by dinner the bouquet reads as a brown shape on a brown wall. Two answers work. Go a step deeper than the request so there is something left after the room takes its share, or put pale flowers into the bunch so the eye has a reference. The second costs nothing and is the one we suggest first, since a deeper tone in a dark room only buys back part of what the room took. Hotel rooms in Nusa Dua and Sanur are easier, because the walls are usually light and there is a table near a window. Terraces are easiest of all in daylight and the worst after sunset, when the only light is whatever lamp is on the wall. Three questions decide it:
- Whether the flowers will be seen mostly by day or after dark. - What colour the wall or table behind them is. - Whether anything pale is going into the same bunch. Lisianthus holds the deepest part of the range we work with. Orchids carry the tone on a long branch and open gradually rather than all at once. Imported roses at 60 to 90 cm and Ecuadorian stems up to 120 cm give lilac and mauve rather than true violet, ranunculus and seasonal peonies sit at the pale end, and macrophylla hydrangea does the volume. Tropical foliage goes in low, and against it the purple heads keep an edge that a bare bunch loses. #### Getting it there in one piece
Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur take 90 to 150 minutes, and Uluwatu, Tabanan and remote villas run to 3 or 4 hours. Above 30 °C in damp air we wrap firmly and add a cooling element, and dark heads get more of that attention than pale ones, since a dense petal picks up heat faster in a warm car. Between November and March the rain gives several overcast days in a row. Under that flat grey light a deep bouquet looks darker than it did in the workshop, and in those weeks we suggest moving a step lighter rather than insisting on the original request. We work 9 AM to 10 PM, and for this colour the daylight slots are the useful ones. A bouquet handed over at nine in the evening is seen at its worst for the first hour of its life, and first impressions of a purple bunch are hard to correct the next morning.
