What it does change is the week ahead. Water in the vase takes on a blue cast within a day or two, the cut end is blue right through, and petals that open later come through pale because no fresh dye reaches them. The bouquet drifts towards white with turquoise veins, which is its normal ending rather than a fault. A damp dyed petal marks pale cloth, so these arrangements are never misted. Bali gives that last point more weight than most places. The climate is humid tropical, and above 30 °C with high humidity we wrap firmly and put a cooling element in the box, which also keeps a dyed head from sweating onto the paper on the way over. The drier months, roughly April to October, are kinder to the colour than the November to March rains. Roses arrive at 60 to 90 cm, with Ecuadorian stems up to 120 cm when the bouquet has to read across a room, and white material is what goes into the dye bucket. Petal thickness decides how fast the colour travels, so a batch is left standing until the rim has taken, not for a set number of hours. One more thing worth agreeing before the box is packed is where the bouquet will stand. Under daylight or a cool white bulb turquoise looks close to the catalogue picture. Under a warm lamp on a villa terrace in the evening it gives up part of its depth and slides towards sage, and nobody has done anything wrong: the light simply carries less blue than daylight does. Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur take 90 to 150 minutes. Uluwatu, Tabanan and remote villas run to 3 or 4 hours, and on those routes the box stays shut until the recipient opens it. Keep the wrapping neutral. Grey, white and clear film leave the shade alone, while warm kraft drags it towards a muddy green, and standing next to tropical foliage that shift is even easier to see. Batches are dyed to order, so a specific shade needs a few days rather than a morning. Tell us which flower it has to sit beside, because two white flowers with different petal thickness come out of the same dye at different depths.
