Blue bouquets in Bali: buying one that survives the drive

Blue bouquet being recut and placed in water on a villa terrace in Bali

Heat is the first thing to plan around in this colour, not the last. Warmth pushes short-lived material through its cycle at speed, and a bouquet that would hold for a week in a cool room can be past its best in half that time on a villa terrace. Blue rewards a cool spot more than most colours do.

Orders start at 650000 IDR, with payment through QRIS, GoPay, OVO, DANA or cash to the courier.

"The question we get is which flowers are in it. The question that changes the outcome is what time the recipient walks through the door."

— JFLOO florist

Ask what is carrying the blue before agreeing on a price. Two bunches at the same price can behave completely differently over a week, and the answer also tells you whether anyone will be changing tinted water.

Recut the stems on arrival and get them into water quickly. On a hot day that single step is worth more than anything done later in the week.

Distance, rain and the hour

Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur take 90 to 150 minutes. Uluwatu, Tabanan and the remote villas run to 3 or 4 hours, and on the long legs we shift the build towards imported roses at 60 to 90 cm and Ecuadorian stems up to 120 cm, which take a road better than softer heads do. Macrophylla hydrangea gives volume close to home and is the first thing we drop from a long run. Lisianthus adds fine texture, and tropical foliage sits low and dark so a cold bouquet does not look thin against a bright room.

Above 30 °C in damp air we wrap firmly and add a cooling element. Between November and March the rain adds its own problem, since applied colour moves when water reaches it, so wet season deliveries go boxed and get opened indoors.

Three things settle the timing of a run:

  • The hour the recipient is genuinely at the address.
  • Whether the bouquet waits on a table in the sun before anyone sees it.
  • Whether it will be moved again after the handover.

The middle one costs more vase life than the distance does. A bouquet left standing at a villa for the afternoon has already spent a day of its week before the recipient walks in, and with this colour the cost lands on the fast material first, so what is left by Friday is the patient half of what you paid for.

Ask for a delivery slot close to the hour someone is actually there. It is the cheapest thing on this list and it does the most.

Blue and white arrangement standing away from the window in a Nusa Dua hotel room, Bali

Direct sun shortens the colour as well as the flower. Applied blue gives up faster than a grown pigment, and an afternoon on a bright sill takes visible edge off it, so the vase belongs away from the window even in a room that feels comfortable.

We work 9 AM to 10 PM, and the late slots exist for exactly this reason rather than as a convenience.

One more habit is worth building in when the flowers arrive from a long run. Give them an hour somewhere cool and out of the way before they go on display, since a bunch that has just come off a hot road looks worse than it will after it has drunk. People judge the order in the first minute and often judge it at the worst possible moment.

Where the bouquet has to hold for several days, say so at the point of ordering rather than afterwards. We build a different bunch for a three day stay than for a single dinner, and the difference is in what carries the colour rather than in how many stems go in.

Blue bouquets in Bali go out mostly to professional dates, housewarmings and handovers with an audience. Send the address, the hour and whether anyone will be home to put the flowers in water, and we will set the build and the run around that answer.
