### Coffee bouquets in Bali: the flowers that carry it, the light that shows it Roses give the widest set of these tones. Muted brown and beige varieties exist in the imported 60 to 90 cm group and among Ecuadorian stems up to 120 cm, and the two lengths do different jobs: the short ones read as a table object, the long ones as something built for a room. Everything else in this palette is company for them. Lisianthus works the same range from another direction. Thin petals let light through, so its heads read paler and softer than a rose sitting at the same point on a colour chart, and orchids do the opposite with a waxy even surface that holds when a matte petal has already gone slack. Macrophylla hydrangea supplies the mass. Late in its life the colour goes dull and antique, which is precisely the register this palette wants, while the same flower fresh and bright argues with everything near it. Ranunculus adds a dense layered head without adding weight to the bunch. Foliage is where the palette usually gets lost. True dark brown and the step into ochre do not exist in fresh cut heads at all. Preserved roses hold the tone for months and never drift off it. A bouquet made half from fresh and half from dry is also the only version anyone can order twice and get twice. #### How it behaves in a room and in a photograph These bouquets need light in a way bright ones do not. Put one in a dim corner and it stops being a bouquet, because the whole effect depends on small steps between sand, cocoa and clay, and low light flattens every one of them into a single brown mass. Villas here are full of exactly those corners: deep verandas, timber screens, roofs built to keep the sun out. A window seat or a lamp aimed at it solves the problem in one move. So does a dark wall behind it. Photographs punish the palette for the same reason. A phone camera without manual settings pushes muted beige either grey or yellow, so the picture a sender receives rarely matches what is standing on the table. That matters more than usual with an island delivery, since the sender is often on another continent. The bouquet gets judged from one photograph taken by whoever opened the box, in whatever light they happened to have. A dark wrap and a dark anchor are what carry it through that. #### What this means for the delivery We deliver 9 AM to 10 PM. Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur take 90 to 150 minutes, while Uluwatu, Tabanan and remote villas run to 3 or 4 hours. Above 30 °C and in high humidity we use firm wrapping and a cooling element, which the fresh part needs and the dry part does not. From November to March the box stays closed until it is inside, since damp air softens dried material and water marks a muted petal. Ubud dinners and ocean villas in Seminyak are the two addresses where this palette does its best work. Both are rooms full of wood and linen, and a coffee bouquet sits in them like part of the furniture in the good sense of that. Bright resort interiors are the wrong room.
