### Green bouquets in Bali: depth comes from three greens, not one Grey green, true grass green and lime are effectively three different colours, and an arrangement needs all three. Built from one of them it flattens into a bundle of leaves, and no amount of volume rescues it. Texture carries as much weight as tone. A glossy leaf beside a matt one, a fine frond beside a broad blade, a torn edge beside a smooth one. Photographs show this contrast better than they show colour, since a camera pulls close shades together and leaves shape to do the work on its own. Proportion matters as much as presence. Tropical greenery holds for weeks, and macrophylla hydrangea cut at the green stage dries in the vase and stays presentable without water. So the arrangement ages in two stages rather than one. When the flowering heads go, they come out, the greenery is trimmed shorter and returned to fresh water, and what remains is a second, denser arrangement that keeps going. Nobody has to buy anything for that to happen. The flowering part sets how long the first stage lasts. Lisianthus, orchids and hydrangea in its green stage are the usual carriers here, and the fewer of them go in, the longer the arrangement stays in one piece. Trimming for the second stage is a two minute job. Pull the spent heads, cut the foliage shorter, change the water, and what comes out is denser than the original because the gaps close up. Leaf mass drinks heavily. Check the water level daily rather than every other day, because a green bouquet empties a vase faster than roses of the same size.
