### Pink bouquets in Bali: the paper is doing half the work The sheet around the flowers is not a container. It is usually the largest single block of colour the recipient sees, it sits directly against the petals, and whatever it does to the shade cannot be undone once the bouquet is tied. That matters more in this group than in any other, because pink runs from near white blush through powder, coral and salmon to cold fuchsia, and each of those wants a different neighbour. Brown kraft is the shop default and the least helpful choice for pale shades. Its own warm tone sits close to blush and peach, the line between flower and paper softens, and from a few steps away the whole thing reads as one beige mass. On a villa terrace with wood and rattan around it, that effect doubles. Black matte does the opposite. It cuts the bouquet out of the background completely and pushes pale pink towards luminous, which is why it photographs so well and why so many resort orders ask for it. It also makes a gift look formal, sometimes more formal than the sender intended. White is honest and slightly cruel. Manufactured white is cleaner than any petal, so blush and powder next to it look faintly grey, and only saturated pinks hold their own. Grey and sage are the quiet middle ground, muted enough not to compete and cold enough to keep warm pinks from spreading. They suit an arrangement meant to live in a room rather than travel to a party. #### The address changes the answer Where the bouquet ends up decides the sheet more reliably than taste does, and on this island the addresses fall into a few clear kinds. - An ocean villa in Seminyak or Canggu, where the room is already full of natural material and dark paper is the only thing that keeps a pale bouquet separate from the furniture. - A hotel room in Nusa Dua, where the flowers stand alone on a table and light paper does the job without turning the gift formal. - A wedding at Jimbaran, where every bouquet on the day has to sit in one family, and the wrap is the fastest place for that agreement to break. - A dinner in Ubud. Distance decides the rest of it. Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur take 90 to 150 minutes, while Uluwatu, Tabanan and remote villas run to 3 or 4 hours, and paper that arrives soft is worse than paper that was never the right colour. On the long legs we box the bouquet and wrap it at the door. Rain does the same thing faster. Between November and March a paper cone can take water in the last twenty metres from the car, so we plan for that rather than hope. Imported roses at 60 to 90 cm and Ecuadorian stems up to 120 cm carry most of the range.
