White bouquets in Bali: the flower decides what the colour says

White carries no message of its own. It borrows one from the flower it is made of, from whatever is bundled alongside it and from the day it arrives on, which is how the same shade reads as a wedding to one person and as something quite different to another.

Get that reading right and the bouquet has done its work before anyone opens the card.

White roses with soft foliage read as bridal or romantic, and repeating a single variety across the whole bouquet strengthens it further. Lisianthus and ranunculus in white read as warmth with nothing declared, which suits a birthday, a recovery or a thank you to somebody senior. Orchids in white read as formal and considered, so they go to business addresses far more often than to a home.

Some white flowers carry a funeral association for a great many people. It is strong enough that a birthday bouquet built on them can land badly through no fault of the sender, and it runs much deeper in some households than in others. If the family is unfamiliar, say so with the order and we will build away from it.

Mixing shifts the reading again. Two or three white flower shapes together, some round and some spiky, look arranged rather than solemn, and a handful of green foliage removes the formality altogether.

Which address it is going to

Ceremonies at Jimbaran take more white than everything else combined, and there the reading is settled before we start: one variety, repeated, with green worked through it so the arrangement stays alive under evening light.

Ocean villas and rooms at Nusa Dua are the other regular. A room is looked at in daylight, and daylight is where the difference between a cold white and a cream one becomes obvious, so we ask which window the room has before deciding.

A dinner in Ubud is a third case again. That bouquet is seen at a table for one evening, and the only thing that matters is whether it still reads at candle level when the light drops.

Four questions before the build starts:

• The occasion, in the sender's own words rather than a category name.
• Whether the recipient will see it first in daylight or after dark.
• How well the sender knows the household.
• Whether it stays at the address or travels on afterwards, because white shows every contact and a bouquet carried between two cars picks up marks that only appear the next day.

Delivery to Seminyak, Canggu and Sanur takes 90 to 150 minutes, and Uluwatu, Tabanan and the remote villas run up to 3 to 4 hours. Delivery runs 9 AM to 10 PM, orders start from 650000 IDR, and payment goes through QRIS, GoPay, OVO, DANA or cash to the courier.

From November to March white travels covered from the workshop to the door. Water dries on a white petal and leaves an outline that nobody would notice on a coloured one, and no amount of care afterwards takes it off.

Seasonal peonies and macrophylla hydrangea both come in the pale range and both change the reading towards something softer and more domestic. Say what the occasion actually is and who the recipient is to the sender, and the variety follows from those two lines without anybody having to guess at the meaning.
