200 cm roses: two metres of water column

Two metre roses standing in deep water behind a stage

A cut rose has to lift water from the vase to the bloom with no roots and no pump. Capillary action in the stem does part of the work and evaporation from the leaves pulls the rest up behind it. At two metres that system is running at about the limit of what a cut stem can manage.

Whatever goes wrong with these bouquets goes wrong at the top.

The failure has a name on the bench: bent neck. The stem stays firm along its whole length and then folds just below the bloom, and the head hangs. It happens when air enters the vessels at the cut end and travels upwards, or when bacteria in the water seal the cut so that nothing moves at all. On a short rose the column is short and a partial blockage still delivers enough water to hold the head. At two metres there is no margin left, so the same blockage shows itself within hours.

That is why the first cut matters more here than anywhere else in this part of the catalogue. Cut at an angle, under water if you can manage it, and get the stems standing in deep clean water straight away.

What shortens a two metre stem fastest:

  • warm water in the container, which breeds bacteria in a day
  • leaves left below the waterline
  • an hour spent lying flat on a table, which starts the heads curving upwards
  • dry air from an air conditioner or a heater blowing onto the blooms.

Depth is the other half of the problem. These stems are kept in buckets rather than vases at the shop, standing in a good deal of water, because a long stem in a shallow container drinks unevenly and the top heads suffer first. Keep them deep at home as well. A tall narrow vase with water only in the bottom third looks right and works badly.

Warmth does the rest. A heated room opens a tall rose noticeably faster than a cool hallway, and heads that open quickly also go over quickly. If the bouquet is for an event, keep it in the coolest place available until an hour beforehand.

Weight and handling

Two metres of stem under the largest heads in the range make a bouquet that two people carry comfortably and one person carries badly. Nobody holds it for long, which is a large part of why it belongs at events rather than in a living room.

Large rose head on a thick two metre stem

Handling damage looks like water damage a day later. A head knocked against a doorframe bruises at the outer petals and the bruise browns overnight, and by that point the flowers get the blame. Carry the bunch heads backwards, over a shoulder, along a straight line. Corners are where the damage happens.

Before you order

Ask where it will stand and what will hold it. A deep bucket behind a stage does more for a bouquet of this height than any vase, and it costs nothing to arrange. For a recipient worldwide living in an ordinary flat, the honest expectation is that the stems will be cut down the same evening.

None of this makes 200 cm roses delicate. Handled properly they last as long as any other grade, and the head, being larger, holds its shape longer once open. The difference is that there is no room for a mistake at this length, and what a short rose forgives, a two metre stem reports the same afternoon.
