Cactus plants worldwide: florariums and plants that store their own water
The ZZ Plant in Icosahedron Pot on this shelf holds ninety-one per cent water in its leaves and ninety-five per cent in the leaf stalks, and its rhizome keeps a reserve of its own. Cactus plants worldwide means exactly this kind of plant, built to survive long stretches without a drink. The choice here starts with a glass florarium holding a succulent, or a plant that sits in an ordinary pot.
Succulent florariums and a ZZ plant: what the section holds
Succulents are plants with thickened, fleshy parts that store water for dry spells. In some of these parts, water can make up as much as nine-tenths of the weight. The surface is often waxy, downy or spiny, and these plants carry fewer pores than most greenery. Roughly a third of succulent species grow wild in southern Africa.
There are no cacti here in the strict sense. What the grid holds instead is succulents in florariums and the ZZ plant on its own.
The florariums come in five shapes: the cube, the truncated cube, the droplet, the icosahedron and the dodecahedron. Inside them sit succulents sold under the names Stone Rose, Sedum, Haworthia, Hobbit and Hobbit Jade.
The ZZ plant comes originally from east Africa, from Kenya, Tanzania and the countries around them, and it grows slowly. Dutch nurseries only began propagating it in large numbers from around 1996.
An open glass bowl suits a succulent better than a sealed jar: succulents and cacti come from dry climates. Inside a florarium the usual method is a light spray from a bottle rather than a pour.
A fully closed florarium runs its own small water cycle and suits moss and ferns rather than succulents.
The ZZ plant tolerates low indoor light and can go about four months without watering, since its rhizome holds a reserve. Left in deep shade for a long stretch, though, it does not do as well. Like other aroids, the ZZ plant contains calcium oxalate and is toxic if eaten, so it is worth keeping it out of reach of pets and small children.
Cactus plants delivery worldwide: sending a florarium
A plant like this stays with the person who receives it for a long time. A cut rose in a vase, by comparison, lasts around a week.
Orders are taken at any hour, the checkout takes about two minutes, and no account is needed: a name and a phone number are enough. Where there is no address to give, the recipient's phone number alone is enough to arrange delivery.
The card that goes with the plant is free and can be left unsigned. The courier only knows the recipient's name and address. Payment runs through Visa or Mastercard, and the total shown in the cart is final.
How soon it arrives is shown on the product page, and the delivery page has the rest. Most orders are handed over on the day they are placed.
For a first order, the succulents in florariums suit a shelf that gets some light, the ZZ plant suits a darker room or an office, and for a cut bouquet instead, hand-tied bouquets are the place to look.
