Coral peonies: a short window and how to order inside it

Coral peonies in bud stacked in a florist's crate

Coral varieties come early. They open near the start of the peony season, before most of the pink and white ones are ready, and they finish while the season is still running, so the shade is available for a matter of weeks rather than months.

Missing that window is the usual reason a coral order cannot be filled.

What the window actually looks like

Growers cut coral varieties in the first part of the local season, and while they are running the shade is easy to get in quantity. Then it stops, fairly abruptly, and the same supplier who had crates of it a fortnight ago has none.

Out of season the gap is covered from the other hemisphere, where the growing year runs on the opposite half of the calendar. Heads from those shipments tend to be smaller, the choice of varieties is short, and coral is not always among them.

So a coral peony ordered in the middle of the local season and one ordered outside it are two different conversations.

How to brief the order

Give the date first and the shade second. If the date is fixed and falls outside the window, a florist who says yes without checking is guessing, and what arrives will be roses or ranunculus in a coral tone rather than peonies.

Say how open you want the flowers to be on the day. This matters more with coral than with any other peony shade, because these varieties fade as they open: a head that arrives a deep salmon will be apricot in two days and close to cream by the end. That drift is a property of the variety, not a fault in the flowers, and it is the single most common source of complaints about them.

If you want the deep tone in a photograph, the flowers must be tight when they arrive and kept cool until the last hour.

When coral is not available

The honest alternatives divide into three. A warm pink variety in the same temperature of colour gets closest and keeps the flower. A cream peony with coral roses added keeps the shade and loses some of the scale. Moving the date by a week solves it completely, when the date can move.

What does not work is asking for coral and accepting whatever arrives.

Living with them

Warmth accelerates both the opening and the fading, so a cool room buys days. Wide-necked vase, plenty of water, no leaves below the surface, a slanted recut every day or two: the routine is the same as for any peony, and with coral it also holds the colour longer.

Many people prefer the faded stage to the fresh one. The washed-out apricot of the third day is softer, it sits better in a pale room, and it photographs more kindly than the saturated tone people ask for by name.

Coral peonies read as warmth with no romantic code attached, which makes them easy to send to a colleague, a neighbour or a friend. If they are going to a recipient worldwide during a hot spell, order them closed and expect the colour to travel faster than the courier.
