### Coral peonies in Bali: living with a flower that keeps changing Warmth accelerates both the opening and the fading, and on this island there is a lot of it. A humid tropical climate with a drier stretch from April to October and rain from November to March means the air is rarely doing the flower any favours, so where the vase stands matters more than what was in the box. A cool room buys days. That is the whole trick. #### The routine that holds the colour Wide-necked vase, plenty of water, nothing green sitting below the surface, and a slanted recut every day or two. It is the same routine as for any peony, and with coral it does a second job, because a stem that is drinking properly holds its tone longer than one that is not. Unwrap on arrival rather than in the evening. Peonies travel in a closed box and the stems stop drinking while they are in it, so the first recut and the first deep vase of water buy more time than anything done later in the week. Three habits make more difference here than anywhere else: - Keep the vase out of the path of the air conditioning, since a direct cold stream dries the petal edge as effectively as sun does. - Change the water rather than topping it up, because cloudy water in this humidity turns quickly. - Move the bouquet out of an open terrace at night if the room behind it is cooler. > "Guests ask us how to stop the colour. The washed apricot that coral drifts into is softer than the saturated salmon people ask for by name, it sits better against pale walls and light wood, and it photographs more kindly in strong daylight than the deep tone ever does. What arrives is a stage, not a fixed shade. Anyone expecting the catalogue picture to hold all week will read that drift as a defect. Anyone told about it in advance tends to watch for it instead, and the bouquet becomes something with a schedule rather than an object that slowly declines. #### Where the bouquet ends up standing Villa living puts flowers in open rooms. Rain is less of a problem for the flowers than for the wrapping. Between November and March a box can spend the last minutes of its journey in a downpour, so coral going out in those months is packed firmly enough that the outer layer takes the water while the heads stay dry inside it. An Ubud dinner is the easiest case of all, because the flowers are on the table for one evening and the stage only has to be right once.
