Flower baskets in Dubai: two questions settle the order

Small flower basket on a desk in a DIFC office in Dubai

Everything in this section divides along two lines. How big the arrangement is, and what has been planted in it. Answer those and the page narrows to a handful of options, which beats scrolling through photographs waiting for one of them to feel right.

The first question is about a room you have probably never seen.

Size answers the room

A basket does not travel once it arrives. It goes onto whatever surface is free and stays there, so that surface has to exist before the order is placed. A small arrangement wants a desk corner or a bedside cabinet. A floor version wants a clear metre near a doorway, and in a serviced apartment in Marina or JBR that space is usually already taken by luggage.

The useful thing to establish is not the recipient's favourite colour. It is whether anybody will have to move the arrangement, and how it gets from the car park to the door.

That last part deserves a thought in a city built vertically. Wet foam is heavy, the handle woven into most baskets is decorative, and the arrangement is carried underneath with both hands, which is awkward on a long walk through a lobby and worse in a crowded lift.

Occasions push people the wrong way here. A big anniversary suggests a big basket, but if the evening happens in a restaurant and the recipient then carries the gift onward, the large version becomes a problem for the rest of the night.

Contents answer the lifespan

The second division is what goes into the foam. A single variety basket behaves predictably: the flowers open together, tire together, and the arrangement has one clear ending. A mixed one holds several lifespans in the same block, so it looks generous on day one and then thins out unevenly as the shorter lived heads go first.

Neither is better. They fail differently, and it is worth knowing which failure you are buying.

Supply here shapes that choice more than season does. Dutch roses at 60 to 90 cm and Ecuadorian roses up to 120 cm arrive all year and go into a basket heavily shortened, while greenhouse tulips and chrysanthemums from the UAE sit in the foam at close to their natural length. Dutch peonies turn up outside the local season and leave again without much warning, so a basket built around them is agreed on the day rather than a week ahead.

Four addresses account for most of what leaves the workshop:

  • An office in DIFC, where a low arrangement on a reception counter or a meeting table is read from above and close up.
  • A hotel room in Downtown or on Palm Jumeirah. Height is the constraint, not width.
  • An apartment in Business Bay, where a floor basket works if the hallway allows it.
  • A family address, usually the one case where somebody actually wants the largest version on the page.

Delivery runs 9 AM to 10 PM in a 2 to 4 hour window, orders start from 250 AED, and payment goes through Apple Pay or cash to the courier.

What arrives with it

Stems sit in soaked foam inside a lined tray, so there is no vase, no cutting and nothing to do on arrival. Water goes in at the rim every day or two until the surface stops taking it, and that is the entire routine. In a room with the air conditioning running, the foam empties faster than anyone expects.

"People ask what will still look good in a week. The honest answer depends on the room it stands in, not on the basket."

Say where the arrangement will stand and which floor it is going to. Both change the size we build, and neither can be fixed after the foam has been planted.
