A hand tied bouquet gets edited. Stems are pulled out as they tire, the rest closes up, and the vase looks tidy again after a minute of work. A basket allows none of that: every stem sits in a fixed hole in the foam, nothing is replaced, and whatever the colours do over the following days is what the recipient looks at.

Within any mixed arrangement, part of what goes in is naturally shorter lived. That is normal and not a fault of the build. What matters is where the tired stems sit in the scheme, because a fading head inside a block of its own colour goes unnoticed, while the same head standing alone among contrasting neighbours announces itself from the other side of the room.

Pale petals show wear first. A browning edge on a white or cream petal is legible from a doorway, whereas the identical edge on a deep red or a strong pink stays invisible for days.

There is a second reason to keep a pale scheme small. Cream and white record water damage as readily as they record age, so a splash from a careless top-up leaves a mark that a deep red would never have shown, and in a basket the marked petal cannot be swapped for a fresh one.

Four addresses account for most of the colour briefs we take:

Greenhouse tulips give a flat clean tone with no half shades in it, and Dutch peonies out of season take the cream and blush middle.
