Tall roses in Dubai: the vase decides the second week

A long stem is a longer pipe. Water has to reach the bud against gravity through vessels that block easily, and the further it travels the less forgiving the flower becomes. A short rose survives a careless week, and a tall one does not.

Fill the vase deep, at least a third of the stem, and top it up daily. Tall roses drink noticeably more than short ones, and a warm room can drop the level by several centimetres in a day.

There is a simple check for whether the depth is right. Lift the bunch out and look at the wet line on the stems, which should sit roughly where the lowest leaves were stripped. If that line is only a few centimetres up from the cut, the vase is too shallow for the grade.

Cloudy water is the other half of the problem, and it is the half people skip. Bacteria multiply in warmth and seal the cut within a day, after which topping up achieves nothing. Change the water completely and rinse the vase each time, since a film left on the glass restarts the whole process within hours. Strip every leaf that would sit below the waterline, because submerged foliage rots first and feeds everything else.

Cut with a sharp knife rather than scissors. Blunt blades crush the vessels flat at the point where the flower needs them open, and on a tall stem that alone can cost several days.

Recut every couple of days.

What a flat here does to that routine

Air conditioning is the local variable. A vase standing in the path of a vent loses moisture from the petal edge faster than the stem can replace it, and no amount of water changing makes up for it. Keep the flowers away from the grille and out of direct sun through glass. A fruit bowl nearby is the other thing to move, since ripening fruit releases ethylene and brings the buds on early.

Summer outdoors runs to 40 °C with high coastal humidity, which sounds like the larger threat and usually is not. Once the bouquet is inside and standing in deep water, the room decides the rest.

Same-day delivery helps more than any of this. We run 2 to 4 hours, so the stems reach a vase on the day they were cut down and tied, and the first recut at home happens on a fresh stem. A bouquet that spent a day in transit begins the week already behind.

Tall roses in Dubai hold one to two weeks on this routine, sometimes longer in a room kept cool overnight. Use a heavy vase, floor standing or wide based ceramic, because a long stem works as a lever and a light vase goes over at the first knock. Expect the stems to be trimmed to whatever container is actually there, and take the extra length as a reserve. If the recipient has to carry the bouquet somewhere before it reaches water, ask us for a water pack, since the hours spent dry are the ones that decide the following week.
