Roses by stem length in Dubai: the height you keep by day six

The figure on the product page is measured on the day the flowers are cut and packed. It is accurate then. A week later the same bouquet stands lower in the same vase, and nobody warned the person who paid for the length.

Stem length behaves like a budget that gets spent in small amounts. Nothing dramatic happens at any single moment.

Where the centimetres go

The florist takes the first few at assembly, levelling the cuts and removing the dried end so the bunch does not stand in steps. A little more goes at home, when the stems are trimmed before they reach water. After that the cut is refreshed every couple of days, because the vessels in the stem seal themselves and the flower stops drinking. By day six a bunch can sit noticeably lower than it did on the first evening.

Three situations are worth ordering one step longer for:

• A date that is several days away, when the flowers have to look their full height on the day rather than on arrival.
• A tall vase already standing in the room, where the heads should clear the rim by roughly the height of the vase itself.
• A long-stem order at the top of the range, up to 120 cm, which is exactly where a recut is felt least.

What summer changes and what it does not

Heat does not change the arithmetic.

What it changes is the handover. Summer here runs up to 40 °C, with high humidity along the coast, so every box goes out with insulated packing and stays out of direct sun from the workshop to the door. A long box travels flat and is carried horizontally, the heads separated inside so they do not rub. It should be opened at the address rather than left standing in a corner until the evening, since the stems in it have been out of water since they left the bench. Dutch roses at 60 to 90 cm fit a normal box and a normal pair of hands, while anything near the top of the range needs both planning and space in the car.

Delivery takes 2 to 4 hours, which matters more for long stems than for short ones. The longer the stem, the longer it spends lying down, and the more the first recut at home is doing.

Orders start at 250 AED and are paid by Apple Pay or in cash to the courier. Length is one of the two things that figure buys, stem count being the other, and it is worth deciding which of them the occasion actually needs before the bouquet is built.

Addresses shape the answer as well. A hotel room in Downtown, Marina or Palm Jumeirah rarely has a vase to match a 120 cm stem, and an office in DIFC is unpredictable on that point. A home in JBR or Business Bay is the one case where somebody can walk over, measure the vase and send us the number, which is why family dates are the easiest orders on the board and business handovers the ones we ask most questions about.

We deliver from 9 AM to 10 PM, and the height question is settled before the flowers are cut, not after. Tell us the date the bouquet has to look its best, and whether it is going to a room you have seen or one you have not.

If the roses arrive taller than the vase, cut them down in one go to the length you need. Trimming two centimetres at a time only adds chances to trap air in the stem.
