### Roses in a box in Dubai: the middle of the week is the part you paid for Day one is a photograph. The days that decide whether the format was worth buying come after it, and those are the ones almost nobody describes. #### Days two to five The buds open slowly and fairly evenly. Every stem is fixed at the angle the florist set, so the dome does not sag or fall open the way a bouquet does once the wrapping comes off. The shape on day four is the shape on day one, only fuller and a little wider at the rim. Water is the only variable in that stretch. A layer of foam in a box is shallow, it dries from the top down, and a warm room takes it faster than anyone expects. Roses in a box do not all open at the same rate. The outer ring catches more air and moves first, and the centre follows a day or two behind it. By the middle of the week a box built tight reads as a different arrangement from the one photographed at handover, which is normal rather than a fault. Water goes in at the rim, never over the heads, and it goes in slowly, because card that soaks through from the inside loses its shape and takes the arrangement with it. A box that looks tired while the flowers still look fine has almost always been overwatered. #### What the room does to that week The city has a hot desert climate and summer reaches 40 °C, with high humidity along the coast. Indoors none of that is the problem. Air conditioning is: a box parked in the path of a vent loses foam water quickly and dries the petal edges at the same time, and that combination is the single failure we see repeated in this format. Shade helps more than a cool room does. A box on a bright side table with the blinds open will drop a day even at a comfortable indoor temperature, because the card heats up before the air does. A vent is worse than a window. Warmth is the only lever anyone has at home, and it works in both directions. A box that has to be at its widest for a particular evening is delivered a day or two ahead and kept in the warm part of the room, while one that arrives on the morning itself will still be tight when the guests do. #### Where these boxes actually go Roses in a box in Dubai go mostly to hotel rooms in Downtown, Marina and on Palm Jumeirah, to offices in DIFC, and to apartments in Business Bay and JBR.
