Baskets with lilies in Dubai: heat on the road, pollen at the address

Lily basket in insulated packing leaving for an address in Business Bay, Dubai

Summer here reaches 40 °C and the coast adds humidity on top of that. A lily basket travels through it in insulated packing, soaked to the limit before it leaves the bench, and we do not let it stand in the sun at any point on the route. The road is the easy half of the job.

Indoors, the air is much drier.

Air conditioning runs almost around the clock in this city, and a dry stream from a split unit empties exposed foam faster than the street outside ever does. A lily empties it faster than anything else we build, since the stem is thick and juicy and the leaf is broad and soft. Check with a fingertip at the rim every evening, where damp foam springs back and dry foam crumbles under the nail. Foam that has dried right through takes water back poorly.

Delivery across the city runs 2 to 4 hours, and this format copes with the wait better than a wrapped bouquet does. It arrives closed, the lowest bud opens first, and the rest follow it up the stem over the days that come after.

Orders start at 250 AED and payment goes by Apple Pay or cash to the courier. We work 9 AM to 10 PM.

Weight is worth a warning at the handover. A tall branch on a block of soaked foam puts the centre of gravity higher than most people expect, the weave handle is decorative on nearly every basket, and the whole thing should be carried with both hands under the base.

"A lily basket in an air conditioned flat wants water every single evening. I say it at the door and then I write it on the card."

— JFLOO florist

Pollen, and why a basket makes it worse

The anthers are heavy, orange and greasy, and what falls from them behaves like dye on fabric. In a tall vase most of it drops past the furniture. A basket sits low, its flowers barely clear the rim, and the powder lands on the arrangement's own ribbon, moss and paper. None of those can be cleaned afterwards. A week later the basket looks soiled even when every flower standing in it is intact.

Open flowers leave the workshop stripped of their anthers. The buds that unfold later belong to whoever received the basket, ideally within a few hours of each one opening, using a tissue or small scissors. Powder already on a surface comes off with sticky tape, while rubbing or wetting it turns a loose dusting into a permanent mark.

Tall basket of white lilies in the hall of an apartment in Downtown Dubai

Cats are the other thing we ask about, and that answer is not negotiable. Every part of a lily is toxic to them, the water in the foam included, and a basket at table height is far easier to reach than a vase on a shelf. An address with a cat gets a different composition from us.

Three places it works here

Three rooms in this city take the format without argument.

  • A reception desk in DIFC or Business Bay, where the arrangement is set down once and never moved again.
  • The hall of an apartment in Downtown, Marina or JBR, clear of the vent and clear of the dining table.
  • A villa on Palm Jumeirah, where the room is large enough for a fragrant variety to read as background.

A small bedroom or a windowless meeting room is the wrong place for the same arrangement. Sweet scent with nowhere to go stops being a gift by the evening, and the basket ends up in a corridor.

Baskets with lilies in Dubai leave the workshop closed and finish opening at the address, so the useful thing to tell us is the hour of the handover. A basket going up to a hotel room in the morning is built at a different stage from one arriving at a flat in the evening. Say who signs for it and we will set the buds against that timing.
