The room this lands in is full of white textiles and short on attention. Colour does more work here than variety, and the piece has to arrive finished, since nobody in that house is going to look for a vase. Orders start at 250 AED, paid by Apple Pay or cash to the courier.

Pale shades under a night light

Pale shades do more here than bright ones. Cream, blush, soft peach, pale green and white give a room of white textiles some depth, and they do it without the hard contrast that reads badly under a night light. The old pink and blue convention can be ignored, and in most orders it should be. Cream Dutch roses at 60 to 90 cm and UAE greenhouse tulips cover that range evenly, with no gaps and no shouting. Anything in scarlet or fuchsia asks for attention, and attention is the one thing missing from that room.

Greenhouse chrysanthemums hold their shape longest in the build and carry no scent worth mentioning, which is why they end up in most of these. Ecuadorian roses up to 120 cm stay out of it, since a low arrangement cuts that length away to nothing.

Peonies come up in almost every conversation about this occasion, and outside their season we bring them in from the Netherlands rather than substitute quietly. That is worth confirming before the build rather than on the morning, because it changes both the lead time and the price of a piece that is otherwise straightforward to put together.

The two people nobody orders for

The other parent is the first of them. A compact box in a darker palette, or greenery with one bright accent, is usually the only thing that person receives all week, and it takes about a minute to add to an order.

An older sibling is the second. A separate small arrangement for a child who has just been demoted costs very little and settles a great deal, and it works better than any conversation on the subject. We build it in the same palette as the main piece, smaller, so the difference reads as a difference in role.

A second or third baby attracts far fewer gifts than a first. For that family, something in a pot that keeps growing on a kitchen windowsill says more than a repeat of what arrived the first time round.

Heat, and the hour you book

Summer here runs to 40 °C with humidity along the coast, so the box goes out with insulated packing and does not sit in the sun on the way, in a car or on a landing. Indoors the problem inverts: the dry blast from a vent takes a petal edge to cracking inside a day, so the piece needs a surface out of that path. Delivery takes 2 to 4 hours and runs 9 AM to 10 PM. New baby flowers in Dubai should be booked for the middle of the morning or the middle of the afternoon, because a newborn household sleeps in fragments and a doorbell at seven in the evening is not a kindness.

Three things settle the run:

• a slot in the middle of the morning or the middle of the afternoon
• a surface the piece can stay on, away from the vent
• a number that will answer without the whole house waking up.
