Baskets with hydrangea in Dubai: the cut you never get to see

Hydrangea heads seated low against the rim of a florist basket in Dubai

Few flowers show up a rushed assembly as plainly as this one. The head is heavy, the stem holding it is short once it goes into the block, and there are only so many stems in the basket, so every decision the florist made is out in the open on the day it arrives.

Everything follows from the cut, so start there.

Hydrangea wood seals itself within minutes of being cut in air, and a sealed stem never drinks again however wet the block around it is. The cut is therefore made long and at a sharp angle, sometimes split for a couple of centimetres, and the stem goes into the soaked block immediately afterwards rather than lying on the bench while the florist thinks about the next one.

Splitting the end is the part florists disagree about, and the reasoning is worth knowing. A hydrangea stem is woody enough to seal and hollow enough to trap air, so a long angled cut increases the drinking surface and a short split opens it further. Neither helps if the stem then lies in air for a minute afterwards, which is why the whole sequence happens over the block rather than beside it.

You cannot inspect that cut once the arrangement is built. What you can see is the result two days later, when one head has gone soft while the others are still firm, and that head is almost always the one whose stem sealed before it was seated.

The seating, and what to check at the door

The seating is easier to judge, and you can do it at the door. A hydrangea sits low and angled outwards so that part of the weight of the head rests on the rim of the basket rather than hanging off a short stem, and the arrangement reads as a dense cushion rather than as balls on sticks.

Four things are worth checking while the courier is still there:

  • Whether the heads sit low against the rim rather than standing above it on visible stems.
  • Whether the heads face outwards at slightly different angles rather than all pointing the same way, which is what a considered seating looks like.
  • Whether the arrangement reads as a cushion from the height of a table rather than only from above.
  • Whether the block has been left full, which it should be, since a basket travelling in this heat leaves the workshop soaked and not merely damp.

Heat outside, dry air inside

That heat is the local part of the story. The desert climate takes the city to 40 °C in summer with high humidity along the coast, and hydrangea is the fastest drinker on the bench, so every one of these baskets goes out fully watered, travels in insulated packing and waits in shade at each stop. Delivery takes 2 to 4 hours and runs 9 AM to 10 PM.

Air conditioning is the other half of it. A Downtown flat or a DIFC office runs cool dry air all day, and hydrangea reads that as a demand rather than as relief, which is why an arrangement standing in the path of a vent asks for far more attention than one set a metre to the side of it.

Dutch roses at 60 to 90 cm go in beside the heads as solid colour and greenhouse chrysanthemums from the UAE hold the rim, since both of them tolerate dry indoor air far better than the hydrangea does. Orders start at 250 AED, with payment by Apple Pay or cash to the courier.

"The cut is a moment's work and it decides the whole week. Everything a customer can see about this arrangement was settled before the first stem went in."

Baskets with hydrangea in Dubai are worth ordering with the room described, because the same build behaves completely differently on a shaded side table and under a vent in an open plan office, and we would rather adjust the proportions than have somebody blame the flower.
