60 cm roses in Dubai: reading the top of the bouquet

Florist grading rose heads into a shallow dome in a Dubai workshop

At sixty centimetres the heads sit well above the binding point, and everything the florist did down at the tie becomes visible up at the buds. This is the length where the build starts to argue with the flower. A shorter bunch hides a rushed hour, and this one does not.

Heads are never set at one level. A florist places them with small differences in height so the top reads as a shallow dome, and that dome is what gives the bunch depth when you look at it from the side.

Sixty centimetres punishes careless grading. A centimetre of error at the tie opens into several centimetres at the buds, because the stems fan outward as they rise. One head standing proud of the rest is the first thing anyone notices, and it is the hardest thing to stop noticing afterwards.

A flat top is the other failure. It looks unfinished from every angle except directly above, which is the one angle nobody uses.

"Customers ask us to add stems when the top looks flat. Usually the stems are already there and two of them are sitting a centimetre too low."

— JFLOO florist

When the bouquet arrives, turn it slowly and watch the outline. It should hold roughly the same shape through a full turn, with no flat side and no gap where a head is missing from the second row. Then look below the wrapping, where the lower stems should be stripped of leaves and clear of thorns.

Weight tells you something too.

A bouquet at this length is carried on the forearm. A well built one balances there with the buds slightly forward and slightly raised, and it stays put while the recipient talks to whoever is standing nearby. If it wants to roll in the arm, the spiral underneath is uneven. That same fault makes it lean in the vase a day later.

Heat undoes good grading

Summer here runs to 40 °C with high humidity along the coast, and heat rewrites the top of a bouquet after the florist has finished with it. A bud that opens in transit rises above its neighbours and breaks the line. We add insulated packing and keep the bouquet out of direct sun at every stage, including the few minutes it spends on a parking deck.

Delivery in 2 to 4 hours does more for that dome than any wrapping. The flowers go into water the same day they were tied, so the recipient sees the profile that was actually built.

Tall rose bouquet carried on the forearm at an apartment door in Marina, Dubai

Dutch roses reach Dubai in the 60 to 90 cm range, which makes sixty the grade normally sitting in the workshop rather than the one waiting on a shipment. Ecuadorian stems run up to 120 cm and price accordingly. If head size matters to you more than height, say so before the build. We would rather change the grade than pad the bunch out with filler.

Addresses split the day. Hotel handovers in Downtown, on Palm Jumeirah and around Marina work at any hour, while a bouquet going to a DIFC office wants the morning, before the floor empties for meetings. We take orders from 9 AM to 10 PM and build the long grades last, right before the courier leaves.

Orders start at 250 AED and payment goes through Apple Pay or cash to the courier. For an apartment in JBR or Business Bay, send the floor and the entrance along with the address, since a tall cone turned sideways in a narrow doorway loses its outer row of heads doing it.

60 cm roses in Dubai will be cut shorter at home within the week, and that is ordinary work rather than waste. Ask what the recipient has to put them in before you order, because a narrow vase turns a dome into a column. Deep clean water and a fresh angled cut every couple of days will carry the bunch through, provided the vase is not standing in the draught from the air conditioning.
