What's included in wedding floral decor — where the budget goes

"The florist quoted us $4,000 for wedding decor. Is that even normal?"

We get calls like this once a week. Usually from the bride's parents, sometimes the couple. Same shock: "$4,000 for flowers — really?"

Here's the line-by-line breakdown: what's included, what each element costs, and where you can save versus where you can't.

First — what "wedding decor" actually is

It's not one bridal bouquet. It's a series of elements that can include:

1. Bridal bouquet + groom's boutonniere (base, mandatory)
2. Bridesmaids' bouquets + groomsmen boutonnieres (+25–40% on top of base)
3. Wedding arch (a separate expensive category)
4. Sweetheart / head table decor
5. Guest table centerpieces
6. Photo backdrop
7. Entrance / stairs / aisle decor
8. Small boutonnieres for family (parents' boutonnieres)
9. Floral bracelets / head crowns / lapel pieces
10. Cake flowers

Full set — 8–10 elements. Nobody orders everything. An average wedding picks 4–6.

Line-by-line breakdown

1. Bridal bouquet + groom's boutonniere (base)

Includes: bridal bouquet + boutonniere in the same flowers.

Cost: $130–290 (depends on shape and varieties).

• Budget (round, lisianthus + gypsophila): $130
• Mid (asymmetric with hydrangea): $190
• Premium (cascade or glamelia with peonies): $290

Where to save: simpler shape (round instead of cascade), simpler variety (lisianthus instead of peony), correct season (peony in May, not December).

Where absolutely not: flower quality. A $65 bridal bouquet looks "bought on the way there," and the camera sees it.

2. Bridesmaids' bouquets + groomsmen boutonnieres

Includes: 2–4 small bridesmaid bouquets + 2–4 boutonnieres.

Cost: $50–100 per bridesmaid, $10–15 per boutonniere.

Full set for 2 bridesmaids + 2 groomsmen: $130–230.

Where to save: fewer people (2 instead of 4), or mono-bouquets (one variety).

3. Wedding arch

The most expensive category. A serious floral object 2.5 × 2 m.

Composition:

• Structure (metal or wooden frame) rental — $240–480
• Live flowers (50–100 stems) — $650–1,300
• Two florists working 4–6 hours — $240–400
• Teardown — $80–160

Total: $1,200–2,400 for the arch.

Where to save:

• Dried flowers instead of live — 50–70% savings
• Smaller arch (2 × 1.5 m) — 30% savings
• Rent a "pre-decorated" arch and re-decorate in the palette — 25% savings
• Skip the arch entirely — biggest savings

Honest take: at a 30-person wedding, the arch is often not necessary at all. At 100+ — desirable but not mandatory.

4. Sweetheart / head table decor

Includes: a low arrangement 1.5–2 m along the edge of the head table (facing guests).

Cost: $240–570, depending on palette and density.

Where to save:

• "Runner" instead of dense composition (small posies at intervals) — 30% savings
• Greenery + 30% flowers instead of "dense carpet" — 25% savings

5. Guest table centerpieces

Includes: small compositions in the center of each guest table.

Cost: $55–115 per table.

At 10 tables: $550–1,150.

Where to save:

• Decorate not every table (4–5 of 10) — 50% savings
• Very minimal (one flower in a glass vase) — 60% savings

6. Photo backdrop

Includes: a floral object for photography — wall, frame, "throne" chair with flowers, hanging ring compositions.

Cost: $320–950.

Where to save: use the arch as the photo backdrop (don't build a separate one) — 100% savings.

7. Entrance / stairs / aisle decor

Includes: small posies along aisle chairs, on steps, along the path.

Cost: $130–320, depending on aisle length.

Where to save:

• Only the first 4 chairs in the aisle (not all) — 60% savings
• Rose petals scattered instead of posies — 40% savings

8. Family boutonnieres

Includes: 4–8 small boutonnieres (parents, witnesses, close family).

Cost: $10–15 per boutonniere, total $55–115.

Where to save: boutonnieres for parents only, skip the rest.

9. Floral bracelets / crowns

Includes: wrist bracelet (instead of a boutonniere for a female attendant) or a head crown for the bride.

Cost: $24–55 per piece.

Where to save: often can skip entirely.

10. Cake flowers

Includes: live flowers (untreated with spray!) on the cake.

Cost: $32–80.

Important: only if the baker works with it (some refuse for food-safety reasons).

Where to save vs. where absolutely not

Save

• Arch — smaller, or double as the photo backdrop
• Table decor — decorate 50% not 100%

• Seasonal varieties instead of out-of-season imports
• Crowns / bracelets — skip entirely
• Cake flowers — skip entirely

Absolutely NOT

• Bridal bouquet — the face of the wedding in every photo. Budget from $130
• Groom's boutonniere — without it the couple visually "breaks apart" in shots
• Sweetheart table — if you have one, it must be decorated
• Flower quality — cutting freshness = wilted bouquet by evening

The main rule

There's no "expensive" or "cheap" in wedding floristry — only "proportionate to the total wedding budget." Floral decor is usually 8–15% of the total wedding budget. If your wedding is $16,000, decor at $1,600 is normal. If the wedding is $8,000, decor at $4,000 is disproportionate.
