### Stock bouquets in Dubai: a gift you notice from the next room Some gifts are meant to be looked at once and admired from across a table. Stock is the other kind. The recipient walks back into the room an hour later and the flowers announce themselves again, and that is the entire reason to send them. The scent is dense and sweet with a honeyed edge, and it strengthens through the evening. Two or three stems change how a whole room smells. The flower itself is modest. Small blooms sit tightly along the upper third of a straight stalk, the leaf is grey green and fleshy, and in a mixed bunch the spikes read as vertical filler between round heads. Nobody buys stock for the look of it. #### Which rooms take it Air volume decides this, not stem count. Hallways and large sitting rooms carry the scent well, since there is enough air to keep the concentration reasonable, and a bouquet that would be overwhelming in a study behaves politely in an open plan flat. Small closed rooms do the opposite. In a bedroom the sweetness builds up overnight and is heavy by morning, and anyone who reacts to strong perfume will react to this as well. Beside food it competes with the meal, so the dining table is the wrong surface for it. Ask first before sending a scented bunch to a shared office, where nobody at the neighbouring desk gets a vote on what their afternoon smells of. The local variable is air conditioning. Windows here stay shut for most of the year and the same air circulates instead of being replaced, so a bouquet that would fade into the background in a ventilated room stays noticeable in a sealed one. That works in your favour in a large flat and against you in a small one. Summer heat up to 40 °C and coastal humidity mean insulated packing from June onward, and boxes do not wait in the sun, which matters here because a soft stalk gives up faster than a woody one. Stock stems are set inside the bunch rather than along the edge. The stalk is thick but soft and full of sap, closer to a herb than to wood, and along the edge it bends under the weight of its own spike and does not straighten again. Change the water every day; every other day is too slow for this stem. Wash the vase each time. Fill it shallow, a hand's depth, so that less of the soft stalk sits underwater, and re-cut the stems with a sharp knife every couple of days. Given that, a stock bouquet holds for about a week, flowering from the bottom of the spike upwards.
