### Mimosa bouquets in Dubai: a few weeks a year, and then nothing Acacia flowers in winter and early spring, and the branches appear in shops for a few weeks around that period. Outside it there is nothing to buy. Greenhouse growing and cold storage do not stretch the season the way they do for roses or for the chrysanthemums that come out of UAE glasshouses all year. So the first question about mimosa is never about care. It is whether the date you have in mind falls inside the window at all. If it does not, the sensible move is to look at other yellow material straight away, since waiting a year for one occasion rarely makes sense and we cannot hold branches for a particular morning. Inside the season the quality varies, because branches are cut at different stages: - a fully open armful looks generous on the day and starts shedding sooner; - a branch carrying some closed balls looks drier and lasts longer; - an over dried bunch passes for normal about a day, then goes all at once. > "People ask us for mimosa in October every year. The mimosa weeks land well outside the summer, when temperatures reach 40 °C and the coast is humid, so the branches arrive during the part of the year when a box crossing town is the least of anyone's problems. Indoors is where the risk sits instead. Air conditioning runs continuously in most flats and offices, and moving air is what finishes this flower, so a vase under a split unit does more damage in a day than the drive from the workshop does. Windows are the other trap. Direct sun through glass warms a branch faster than the room around it, and a bunch that would have held for several days in the middle of a room gives up early on a sunny sill. The window does not open on a fixed date. It follows the flowering rather than a calendar, which is why we quote it in weeks and confirm a delivery date only once the branches are actually with us. Tulips are the usual partner and the timing is the reason. Greenhouse tulips from the UAE are on the counter during the same weeks, their solid heads give the yellow something to sit against, and in the vase it is almost always the tulips that fade first. Beyond that pairing there is little to decide. Mimosa is sold by the armful and never by the stem, it weighs almost nothing, and the size of a bunch gets chosen by the surface it has to cover. Once it is home, unwrap it, re-cut the woody ends and split them a couple of centimetres with a knife, then put the branches straight into water. In the vase a fresh bunch holds for a few days before the balls begin to drop at the slightest movement. That is the flower behaving normally, with nothing wrong in the bunch.
