### Lilac bouquets in Dubai: buy for the room, not for the gesture The smell arrives before the flowers do. Somebody carrying lilac across a lobby is announced by it, and the recipient usually names the flower without turning round. Very few cut stems manage that, and it is the main reason anyone pays for a branch of shrub. It is also where the format goes wrong most often. Scent that reads as generous in one room reads as an assault in another, and the difference is not the quality of the flowers. One branch will scent an ordinary sitting room. Three will scent a whole apartment. Five in a small bedroom become genuinely oppressive by the middle of the night, and the person who received them opens a window at two in the morning and blames the flowers for it. Nothing about the branches was wrong. The quantity was. Apartments here make that worse rather than better. Windows stay shut for most of the year, the air is cooled and recirculated rather than exchanged, and a scent that would drift out of a room with an open window instead builds up in it hour by hour. Air movement is the thing that keeps lilac pleasant, and a sealed flat has very little of it. Size the order to the room, not to the occasion. An office is the harder case, and it comes up often with deliveries into DIFC and Business Bay. An open floor shares air with everyone on it, and a colleague two desks away has no say in what the room smells like all afternoon. One branch on a desk is a pleasure. An armful is a conversation with the facilities manager. Hotel rooms in Downtown or Palm Jumeirah sit in the same category as small bedrooms. Keep the count low there and let the scent be noticed rather than unavoidable. Four things tell us how much to send: - The size of the room the vase will stand in. - Whether it is a bedroom, and whether anyone sleeps in it that night. - Whether the space is open plan or closed. - Who else shares the air. An office floor, a hotel corridor and a private hallway are three different answers, and the last one takes the largest bunch comfortably. Timing helps as much as counting does. A branch delivered in the morning has all day to fill a hallway gently, while one arriving late in the evening does the same work in a closed flat with everyone asleep in it. For anything going into a bedroom we suggest a morning slot and a single branch. Scent also changes across the life of the branch. It peaks when the panicle is half open, with the lower florets out and the tip still in bud, and it fades noticeably once the whole spike has opened. A branch forced under glass out of season looks convincing and smells of very little, which matters when scent is the entire point of the gift. A hallway, a landing or a kitchen with some air moving through it keeps the smell clean rather than syrupy, while a warm closed sitting room concentrates it and shortens the life of the branches at the same time. Away from the bed and away from the dining table covers most of it. Two jobs remain at the vase. Strip the bark from the bottom few centimetres and split the cut end lengthways so water can enter from several sides, then take almost all the foliage off, since lilac leaves are large and thirsty and pull water away from the flowers.
