That is the version most people carry in their heads, and it is why the flower turning up in a catalogue in the middle of the year confuses them. Under glass the picture is different. The flower is grown from prepared bulbs across a much longer stretch of the year, in controlled temperature rather than in weather, which is how tulip bouquets appear long before anything is flowering in any garden. Common colours stay available throughout, unusual ones come and go, and stems tend to be shorter late in a cycle. If a particular tone is the whole point of the gift, ask before the date is fixed rather than the evening before. Stem length is worth asking about alongside the colour. Late in a cycle stems come shorter, which changes what vase the bunch suits and how it reads on a table, and it is a much easier thing to sort out at the order stage than at the door.
