An opening, a promotion, a hospital discharge, the anniversary of a company. In each of those the gift is seen by people who were not in the room when it was handed over, sometimes a fortnight later, and an arrangement that still looks composed at that point says something a wilting one cannot. For a warm family occasion this is the wrong register. Something looser and lower does that job better and costs less. The orchid earns its place where a gift has to keep working after the day it arrived and where nobody is going to look after it. Those two conditions turn up together more often than people expect. An office is the clearest case, a hotel room the second.
Summer sets the packing. The city reaches 40 °C with coastal humidity on top, so the basket travels insulated and never stands in the sun on the route. Indoors the risk reverses, because a cold dry stream from an air conditioning vent gives an orchid petal a glassy edge that browns over a day and does not stop there.
Each branch usually sits in its own small vial of solution hidden under moss, and that vial gets topped up separately from the foam. People throw the vials away as packaging on the first evening, which is the most common way an orchid basket ends early.
