Mono bouquets in Dubai: Dutch hydrangea, tulips and Colombian alstroemeria

Hydrangea reaches Dubai by air from the Netherlands, and its head is so large that a few stems already make a full bouquet, which is how mono bouquets in Dubai are built around one variety rather than a mix. The main flowers here follow a few import routes: the Netherlands, Colombia and Kenya, so choosing the flower also decides where it flew from and how long it will last. All of it comes in by air freight, since there is no other way to bring cut flowers into the Emirates on time.

Dutch hydrangea in Dubai: a few heads make a full bunch

The Netherlands supplies Dubai with hydrangea, tulips and ranunculus, and of the three, hydrangea carries by far the biggest flower. A head this size changes how the bouquet is sized: with large-headed flowers, a handful of stems is already a full bunch, while small-flowered varieties only read as a dense bouquet once there are two dozen stems or more. Hydrangea is therefore chosen by the number of heads and by colour, not by volume the way an armful would be.

One format in the section, a bunch of pink hydrangea, shows the idea at its simplest: a few matching heads, nothing added. Hydrangea also drinks more than most cut flowers and takes in water through its petals as well as its stem, which is why a head that has gone soft is dunked whole in cool water for an hour or two rather than just re-cut. Heat care beyond that is covered on the Dubai flowers page; the hydrangea section itself shows what is currently available.

Tulips and ranunculus on the Dutch route, December to May

Tulips travel the same Dutch route as hydrangea. Dutch growers force tulip bulbs through an artificial winter before bringing them on in the greenhouse, and that cycle runs roughly from December to May, which makes the tulip a winter and spring choice rather than a year-round one. Ranunculus is also a northern-hemisphere spring flower, much like the bulb flowers it shares a season with. Ordering tulips or ranunculus together is a fair shorthand for a spring bouquet.

A tulip does not stop growing once it is cut. It keeps reaching towards the light in the vase, so the bunch's outline can shift noticeably over a day or two, which is worth knowing before judging a photo taken on delivery day. Sending tulips to an office works the same as any other bouquet; a receptionist can take delivery when the recipient is away from the desk.

Alstroemeria and carnations from Colombia, for weeks in a vase

Alstroemeria and carnations reach Dubai mainly from Colombia, a longer flight than the Dutch route but a flower built to take it. Both last two to three weeks in a vase, as does chrysanthemum, against roughly a week for a rose; a chrysanthemum's leaves tend to yellow before its flower fades, so they are stripped off rather than left to brown.

Chrysanthemum is an ordinary flower here, but Dubai's residents are mostly expatriates, and in France, Belgium, Italy, Spain and Poland a large chrysanthemum bouquet still reads as a funeral flower. For a recipient from one of those countries, alstroemeria or carnations make the safer choice.

Mono bouquet delivery in Dubai has its timing shown on each bouquet's own card, and the delivery details page lays out the zones. Ordering for a hotel or hospital, sending from abroad and keeping these flowers alive in the heat are covered on the flowers in Dubai page. For a first order, hydrangea and tulips cover the cooler months, alstroemeria and carnations the rest of the year.
