Peony baskets in Dubai: what the open weave shows
Baskets and boxes are built the same way, on wet foam inside a lined shell. The difference is the wall. A box hides the mechanics completely and hands you a flat field of heads seen from above, while a basket shows the arrangement from the side.
Sides are more generous. They are also much less forgiving.
A head set too deep disappears under a box rim and becomes obvious in an open weave. The same goes for a bare stretch of stem, or a patch of foam that nobody covered. Look into a basket from seated height before you accept it, since that is the height most people will see it from all week. Anything visible from a chair stays visible for the whole life of the arrangement.
The handle is the other thing the wall changes, and it deserves a moment. On most baskets it is decorative rather than structural, thin weave glued or wired into the rim, and the whole piece is heavy once the foam has taken water. Lift from underneath.

Depth of planting is worth checking through the weave too. Peonies come in as hard balls and open to about three times that width. A build that looks perfectly packed at the door will be pressing bruises into itself by the third day. A good one looks slightly airy on arrival and closes into a dome as the buds go.
Peony stems are thick and they go into foam under pressure. Push too hard and the foam crumbles, which loosens every neighbour that was already set.
Foam forgives nothing you rush.
Where the format earns its keep in Dubai
Peonies reach the UAE as Dutch stock outside the season, in batches, so the stage of the bud is whatever came off the pallet that morning. Around them go Dutch roses at 60 to 90 cm for structure, and greenhouse tulips or chrysanthemums where the build needs a firm shoulder near the rim. Ecuadorian roses up to 120 cm are the wrong partner here. They pull the silhouette upward while a basket works outward.
The addresses are the usual ones for a format that needs no equipment. Offices in DIFC and Business Bay, where nobody has ever owned a vase. Hotel rooms at Burj Al Arab, Atlantis The Palm, Address Downtown and Four Seasons, where the arrangement goes up in one piece and needs nothing done to it.
Delivery across the city runs 2 to 4 hours and the workshop takes orders from 9 AM to 10 PM. Summer is the real constraint, not the distance.
At 40 °C with coastal humidity a basket is the safer of the two shells in a car, because the foam is a reservoir and the flowers keep drinking while they wait. We send it out in insulated packing anyway. What ruins it is a parked car in the sun. Ask the recipient to bring it indoors straight away. Inside the enemy changes, since a dry stream from an air conditioning vent pulls water out of exposed foam faster than the street ever does.
Top it up at the edge every day, in a thin stream, until the foam stops taking any. The catalogue starts at 250 AED, and payment goes by Apple Pay or cash to the courier.
Peony baskets in Dubai are usually ordered for somebody who will not be at the address when the doorbell rings. Say who signs for it and at what hour, and we will set the planting tighter or looser for that road. A basket that spends two hours at a concierge desk is built differently from one handed over at a dinner table.
